Busse or Mad Dog

I do not know which is "better". However take a look at the Mad Dog site. A discarded blade was torture tested and I was absolutely amazed at the things they did to it without it breaking or chipping. At any rate it is an interesting site.

I don't either, but I wish I had a Busse. :D

Go read through the Busse forum. It's filled with knife torture posts. I read the forum just for the amazing stories. Darn those knives can take some abuse!!!

I think you can do a search, and you should find what you are looking for without any difficulty. This topic was discussed numerous times. Good luck!

HAD THE BUSSE STEELE HEART E GREAT CHOPPER. JUST SOLD IT BOUGHT A CHRIS REEVES SHADOW III NOT A CHOPPER BUT EASIER TO CARRY IN THE FIELD.

I have owned both. I sold my Mad Dog and still have the Busse. In fact I now have several Busse Combat knives.

Since your question is about "hard work", the Busse is the clear choice here if you look at the blade design. The Mad Dog has more of a fighter influence versus the Busse with it's more utilitarian "Nuclear" toughness. For a hard work knife to dig in the dirt, pry open ammo crates or car doors or, heavy chopping that would be appropriate for an axe, Busse.

For steel, I'll take Busse's INFI over Mad Dog 0-1. Mad Dog's have an great grip that fits the hand very well. The newer "E" handle Busses are an improvement over the old "straight" handled Busse's. Which one is better? I would go with a Mad Dog if I needed a knife in a fight but, the Busse if I was do anything else. Without gloves, the Mad Dog would also have slight advantage in temperature extremes - especially freezing cold conditions (if it's that cold though, wouldn't you have gloves on?).

Overall, best value and best for "hard work"? Busse Combat.

What do you need from this knife?

A while back, I seem to remember someone posting a question, wondering if anyone knew how to make a flamethrower.

This is how. At least, it used to be.;)

  I like the Busse alot.Never handled a MadDog.I would say as for a survival knife and heavy duty use the Busse would be a great Choice. As a fighter I would go with the MadDog as far as design goes.

I'm not the best person to answer this because I only have one Busse and never a Mad Dog. The Busse I have is the Badger Attack E with a Busse Battle Mistress E and Mr. Mojo CG coming. I bought them after reading all the rave reviews here. That having been said I cannot imagine anything that would stand up to abuse and hard work than a Busse. If I had any reservations about it they would concern the handles. They are of canvas micarta and feel like the stuff paper egg cartons are made of. I'm sure they're tough and I know they give a good grip but they look like they'd absorb all sorts of liquids. I have no doubt my money was well spent.

Upon closer examination I believe my first impressions of the grips were false. They ARE tough but not absorbant or comparable to egg cartons. Look twice and think once before you speak!

I own a half-dozen Mad Dogs, never even bothered to buy a Busse! :D ;)

Seriously, they are both very high quality blades, Busse with the metalurgical approach to superior cutting tool durability (INFI), and Mad Dog with the more traditional differential heat treatment of low alloy steel. I simply like Mad Dog designs better.

I must admit. . .I've never owned a Busse. But, I've owned several Mad Dogs (and still do).

With that said. . .there is absolutely no way that I could compare the 2 !

So. . .will stick with the MD side of the house ~ until one of you Busseites let me borrow one of yours to test our for a short spell. :)

Mad Dog knives. . .very well thought out and executed bunch of knives. Kinda like knives with attitude behind it. ;) :D

Edit: Spelling. . . 2 hours sleep in 48 hours and 4 Heinekens + DON'T MIX ! LOL Please don't try this at home ! Only trained experts, like myself, should only think of this idea ! :)

I agree with Sid.

Since I'm not military, and can't imagine being in an actual knife fight (my folder is the only thing that is "always" with me), for me the Busse is the ticket.

INFI is a real novel and high performance steel.
I prefer MadDog's grips in many ways.

If I could have a slightly modified Maddog grip (flared butt on handle) on an INFI blade, that would be perfect for me.

What Steve Harvey said.

Make mine Mad Dog, wasn't always that way but experience is the best teacher for me.

Glad to see this topic discussed without the flames of the past.

That was me asking about the flamethrower. As for Busse Vs. Mad Dog,
I have owned two Mad Dogs, I currently have one, a thin grip Pack Rat I purchased for a hunting/backpacking knife. I love it. I have never owned a Busse, but I have handled lots of them. I guess I just have a preference for the way the MD's feel in the hand.

Let me start by saying I'm not a hard core user. I've owned both.

I agree with Steve, they are both excellent knives in their own right.

The Mad Dogs I've had leaned toward the fighting style. If I was ever going to be in a serious fight and depended upon a knife to get me out, a MD Panther would definitely be my choice. I simply dropped my ATAK Thing from waist high, hit my calf muscle, and managed to put the point more than an inch into my leg. Now that's a sharp, perfect shaped, fighting blade in my opinion. The MD fighters, and especially the shape of the handles, are made for fast and furious situations.

If I was stuck out in the woods and needed a knife to depend upon, I would hope I'd have my Busse with me. The weight and style of my Natural Outlaw just makes you want to whack away with it, just cause you can and it likes it. I didn't really like the Busse E-handles at first. Totally different than Mad Dog's. But they grew on me, and after using them they really started to make sense.

I haven't owned the hard use style knives of Kevin, i.e. the ATAK, so I'm not doing a apples to apples comparison here, just trying to give you some additional insight.

Before anyone makes up his mind they should hold and evaluate both. You just can't decide by looking at your computer screen.
