Busse or not a Busse

Regardless of any handle mods or rehandling, I think the main focus would have to be in the choil/guard area. It's a dead giveaway.
Even the earliest models Jerry made that I can envision exhibit a guard to choil (& ricasso) marriage that is clean and unbroken. They are one, even sans choil:thumbup:

I'm agreeing with Strabs. I've got some very old Busses ... and they retain this signature feature.

I of course retain the right to be proven wrong. What say experts like Randucci, the Skunker, Garth Reckner, and ... well ... the Man Himself?:)

Great find, the second one down has the same type of blade grind.

I don't see Busse when I look at that knife. Just another maker copying the Busse patented talon hole.........

I think it is Ted Frizzell's work. A great knife.

Not to be techincal, but I think you meant "trademarked". The Talon Hole is Jerry's trademark, not patent. A patent and a trademark are two different things and a lot of people assume them to be synonymous.

I agree.

I'd go even further, and note that, from even back then, Jerry propounded the design concepts of making radiused corners, not sharply angled corners, and – as best I can see with these knife pictures – this knife's choil and guard area goes against this design concept which JB has explicitly espoused from the beginning.

Edited to add: Actually, looking at it more closely, that knife does appear to be radiused. Nonetheless, it doesn't look like the continuous guard and choil design JB seems to have always favored.

I am appreciative of all you folks stepping up and helping me out with your input.

For those that asked for measurements: 9 7/8" long, the tang is 3/8" thick, but the blade narrows to 3/16" just in front of the jimping. The blade is 1 1/4" wide at the jimping, widening to 1 5/16" more towards the tip. I'm sorry, I don't have a scale. The handle pins are soild, and have been ground flat without marring the slabs. The metal above the grind line and behind the plunge line is visibly rougher than the hollow ground portion of the blade. One other point that I do notice, the Talon Hole on Busse pics seem to be the same diameter all the way thru. This one narrows and then widens again.

I think it is Ted Frizzell's work. A great knife.

I have a couple of Ted's knives and this one feels a little heavier, if you know what I mean.

it doesn't exactly scream busse, but who knows. busse's tend to be much, much less angular. anywhere where a corner exists will tend to slope into the surrounding geometry.

that knife is from an old post where a guy posted an old field grade of his that he had questions about. I think the fr marking is his initials, but it's been a looong time since I read it, and it's somewhere in the archive lakes.

this example from oldphysics reasserts my comment about corners tending to blend in long curves to the surrounding geometries:

jerry's ruger bowies and really early work was a bit different then his feild grade stuff. but still, it all followed the curving into surrounding geometry formula. while there were points, they were on top of cuves, never juxtaposed onto straight lines.

Howdy - I have a knife I picked up a few years ago that has no markings on it of any sort. Looking at it, it reminds me of some of the early pre-infi Busse designs. As I am no expert, I've attached a few pics and am looking for assistance. Thanks for your help.

NOT a Busse.

The many observations made in this thread confirm what is constantly leveled at me during our production meetings when I lay out my new designs for the week, and that is that I am ridiculously consistent.

Very flattering and humbling to see how many HOGs have honed in on my design tenets. . . . but mostly it shows how many heavy drinkers we have amongst us!!!!!

Nice job gang!
