I started making knives in 1982. The first steels I used were D-2, 0-1, and A-2. I never used leaf springs because I wasn't really a forger. I have always been a stock removal (grind it off) kinda guy.
Leaf springs can be made into magnificent knives, as they are made from 5160 steel. I was just never the guy to do it as they would have had to retain their predisposed arc. Good for poking around corners and making wooden bowls but that would've been about the extent of it.
