BUSSE'S in use...

Here are a few pics from this weekend. I had to render an apple wood piece to chips for my smoker. The Piece I chopped up had a huge knot in the end and an un even end so it took a while to batton it, and then chop the knot off the end to baton the second part.

This tree was blocking the trail, but I only had my GW, SS and ASH1 with me, and not enough time. So I went back later with my FBMLE to give the tree what for! Only problem, was a ranger must have gone up with a chain saw and the tree was cut out of the way. There were about 4 on that stretch of trail, all even bigger than this one. But he got them all cut out of the way.

Bigfattyt...How do you like KZ as a chopper compared to other choppers that you have.

It will definitely chop. It does vibrate in the hand, but that is an issue with the micarta handles pinned on.

I was a bit spoiled by having a hand smoothed FBMLE with a great convex edge as my first chopper from busse. I feel like the KZII will out chop it. I have convexed the edge on the KZII. Next I need to smooth the handle slabs. I ordered it machined to try it out. I will be sanding it down here some time. Ik feel as though the KZII does not get stuck when chopping as much as my old FBMLE. I t seemed like often I spend as much time trying to get it unbound. Normally when I am chopping with them, the log is already in sections.

The B11 chops awesome for its weight. Feels like 1/2 the weight of the KZII. Add in the shock absorption for the handle and it is a real winner.

The KZII is the king of the choppers I have owned. If I had the cash I would have got the LE version. Factory convex with a blended primary. Full convex is something Busse does well, and it would save me a lot of time!

Rock hard 4 years of seasoning and drying apricot limbs. They sound like your hitting a chunk of ceramic and the knives/axe want to ricochet really hard when you miss. Apricot is 1360 on the janka scale, putting it at the same hardness as white oak. Beautiful color in the grain.

it was interesting using the basic 11 on the tree, because there was really, really intesndle, so much that my hand kinda hurt. I realized later in the day while chopping the limbs into peices to put in a bin that I was hitting way past its center of percussion. Once I started hitting a little more towards the handle than the center of the blade, it felt way, way more solid. I was suprised at how far back it was.

Imagine how much more hand smack you would have gotten with a traditional Busse riveted handle with micarta or g10.

I sure as heck notice the difference between my micarta handled choppers and the B11!

I chopped up a hard knotty piece of apple wood that has been seasoned for a few years.

A lotta "ring" from the KzII. The B11 was much more cushy for chopping hard.

Not bad at all, especially for a first timer. As was already said, Practice, Practice, Practice. That is if you want to get better.

I think the only guy that had a slower time than me is in his 50s. Where should I be aiming for my blade to hit the 2x4? Up near the belly, middle, close to the handle? And for technique, do I want to go in a V pattern half way then sraight down or what?

Glad to see you on here Dave! HULK SMASH!!!!

You're worried about technique with a knife that has a 10inch blade, come on Dave, just chop away :D

and then I stripped it to get rid of the wood that embedded into the coating:

Busse Boss Jack Knife is the finest Blade I own, and has become part of a morning ritual.

Thats a Mashed Cat Kydex sheath on top of the catnip tin (coffee beans), and the sheath is as well crafted as the Busse Knife is.
