Busses on Survival TV Shows

After a day outdoors, I watched some TV last night. I like the survival shows like Man, Woman, Wild and the others. I see Cold Steels, SOGs, and other brands used by these folks, but I have yet to see a Busse, Swamp Rat, or Scrap Yard knife used. Maybe these other manufacturers pay to have their knives used in the shows. I don't know. It seems a shame to me that the very toughest and best outdoor knives you can buy don't show up on these shows. Or maybe I just missed them.

I just thought it was because they are more widely recognized and available than Busse/kin.

Alot of Special Forces guys really don't have that much knowledge about fire-arms. They know how to use them VERY well but if you were to sit down and have a discussion about all of the different kinds they would be lost.

Maybe it's sort of like that.

You are probably right. Sometimes I forget that most folks never heard of a Busse Combat knife. And they sell all they make, so they don't really need the advertising. I just want to see somebody stab a gator with an Argonne, I guess. :D

I keep looking to see a Busse knife on those shows, but still havn't yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if those manufacturers do pay to have their knives used on the shows.

thats how you know these guys, although sharing good knowledge, really dont know squat about survival knives...and prob get paid to use certain knives.

Pretty much every product placement in TV (and to some extent, even movies) is pay for play. Why did E.T. have a soft spot for Reece's Pieces? Because M&M Mars didn't want to pay (or wasn't willing to pay as much).

It is a smart play. If you search around blade forums, you see countless threads on what is being used by whom. And eventually, many of these experts see the value in putting their name on a particular device and making even more money that way.

Bear Gryls started off using SOG and Becker, but then teamed up with Bayley to make this blade, which I think sold for well over $400. That relationship appears to have ended and it will be interesting to see what he has when the new season starts.

Mykel from Man Woman Survival uses lots of different knives. He lists the knives and clothes they wear on each episode on his blog. You'll note he wears a lot of very expensive designer stuff. His feet are wrapped in Armani socks before they are stuffed into his dirty Army boots. He also wears a lot of Armani and FCUT clothes which I'm guessing aren't things he regularly buys himself.

He markets his own knife as well.

In a 2008 interview with Dave Canturbury, he said the only knife he would carry is a KaBar or a Tom Brown Tracker, which, as you'll see, has the logo for Dave's company on it. Later he also marketed another TOPS model called the Pathfinder and, today, he uses a knife -- which also bears his company logo -- made by Blind Horse Knives.

His shoeless hippie sidekick uses dirt cheap Mora knives. My guess is that he is not getting paid to use these but chooses to use them to make some sort of statement -- perhaps that he won't sell out to the man or perhaps that you don't really need a $300 - $500 knife to keep your ass alive.

I'll bet more people than would like to admit it have purchased knives based at least in part because of these endorsements. Hopefully these guys at least have the integrity to only endorse quality knives.

If you want to see a recent example of how effective product placement can be, try to find a Benchmade model 42 Bali-Song. They are considered by many enthusiasts to be among the best "flippers" out there, but were recently discontinued. They may be popular among the Bali-Song community, but that's a small community.

However, the 42 played a small role in the movie "Kick Ass." Before this movie, they were easy to find in stores for around $130. After the movie, they were going for $280 at online retailers until they were gone and some people were paying $300 - $400 for used ones. Now Benchmade is using their inventory of parts to put some new ones together to satisfy demand.

Yesterday at the indy show I talked to Dave Canterbury from dual survival. He saw the FSH I was carrying and asked to see it. He told us that Jerry has actually given him several knives and then Daves wife (I think she was his wife?) came up and was telling him about some knife she had just seen on the Busse table. From this experiance I would say these guys know their knives but the issue is endorsements and TV contracts. Dave's group Pathfinder sells knives so why would he use a Busse on his TV show when he could be getting free advertising for the product he sells. It seem more like a business move than anything.

As a side note, it seemed like Dave really likes Busse and might have picked one up himself at the indy show if his wife was able to talk him into it.

I watched that same show last night and I kept thinking, man he would be able to chop that a lot better with a B11. :D;)

Or a BWM!:D Actually, those CS Kukri machetes like he was using to make the raft, chop pretty well.

Did you see the episode where they were in the desert in Peru and he was making sandals from car tires? That Mora went through that tire like a hot knife through butter. He either gets a new knife for every show (probably not) or knows how to sharpen a knife.

It was also interesting in the show in the Washington rain forest where he had to borrow Dave's knife because the spine on the Mora wasn't square enough to work with the Light My Fire steel.

The nail has been hit on the head. If they are being paid to use knives, or actually have their own brand or collaboration knives, that is what they will use.

Also, a knife does not have to be expensive to work. You can sure bet, I would rather have a Busse (or any kin knives) than those from a lot of makers.

That said, I could order a hand full of the cheapest knives from CS, take them out into the field and be just fine. I would have to sharpen them more often, but I have knives from them that I have been using fore decades without issues.

These guys may have great knowledge (sometimes) but they are being paid to do the shows, and if they can make tips by using X brand of knives, they will.

I look at it another way...

I honestly think that realistically a decent quality knife is just as good as a high quality, top of the line knife for 99.9% of outdoor, camping and survival tasks...

I would not hesitate to carry a $25 mora backpacking or camping and feel confident. I would not hesitate to carry a $20 machete and feel confident.

People survived and hunted for hundreds and hundreds of years with knives that were a fraction of the quality by our standards today...

Yes I love Busse knives and all the other top o the line brands, but I think it makes a good point that you don't beet top of the line to survive or camp or hunt. As long as it has a sharp edge...

Just my opinion.

I know for a fact that I don't really need INFI. I have used machetes and knives of ordinary carbon steel for decades. I know how to use them, too. But I just like owning the best. Heck, at my age, just surviving a full day of yard work is a challenge. No way is this old man is likely to test the strength of a Busse.

Besides, we all know that the Busse group has the cutest ladies in the business!!!

Looks like a lot of folks watch discovery channel.

Perhaps the generous Busse kin owners here on the forum could contact the shows producers and offer to donate a knife to be used on the show?

Maybe one that had a bladeforums blade etch ?
