Busses on Survival TV Shows

Yesterday at the indy show I talked to Dave Canterbury from dual survival. He saw the FSH I was carrying and asked to see it. He told us that Jerry has actually given him several knives and then Daves wife (I think she was his wife?) came up and was telling him about some knife she had just seen on the Busse table. From this experiance I would say these guys know their knives but the issue is endorsements and TV contracts. Dave's group Pathfinder sells knives so why would he use a Busse on his TV show when he could be getting free advertising for the product he sells. It seem more like a business move than anything.

As a side note, it seemed like Dave really likes Busse and might have picked one up himself at the indy show if his wife was able to talk him into it.

I have no knowledge of any business/knife/TV deals or anything like that but I met Dave at the Blade Show. I am almost positive I remember him walking away from the Busse booth with a Basic 11. I keep waiting to see it on the show.

Oh yeah. That knife would be a perfect survival chopper. I need to get one of those.

Frankly, I thought it was because they were cheap ... throw-away, essentially.

That too. Although I have some cheap throwaways myself. They're called "loaners". Wait, I'm not sure you'd understand. You don't loan out cheap knives.;):D;)

Right on, I'm still wondering if he picked up anything at Indy. I know if my wife was after a Busse I wouldn't say no.

The first time I ever seen a Busse was watching an episode of Hoods Woods (google him up) I've only seen a few of his episodes but he done like everybody else and starting marketing his own knives. But it did spark interest in the Busse brand and I researched it thoroughly before making a purchase. Glad I did too!

I ***think*** it was the most recent (Nov) issue of Blade that I was looking at yesterday where there was an article comparing 3 "tough" production knives with the goal to picking the best one. There was not a Busse family knife to be had in the group, despite the full page ads for Busse coming just a few pages later. I think the winner of that comparison was an all-titanium blade , but I don't remember the manufacturer.

Did you see the episode where they were in the desert in Peru and he was making sandals from car tires? That Mora went through that tire like a hot knife through butter. He either gets a new knife for every show (probably not) or knows how to sharpen a knife.

It was also interesting in the show in the Washington rain forest where he had to borrow Dave's knife because the spine on the Mora wasn't square enough to work with the Light My Fire steel.

Michael

I did the Jerry Busse Basic-9 test on a Mora outdoorsman somethingorother. I was impressed at it's edge-holding ability. It's just not a hard-use knife by any stretch. But it's cheap and for 90% of survival tasks, it's adequate.

All that said, I think it's about the # of knives in the marketplace today. I prefer that Busse isn't advertised on these shows. Think of how long the wait for new knives would be then!

Alot of Special Forces guys really don't have that much knowledge about fire-arms. They know how to use them VERY well but if you were to sit down and have a discussion about all of the different kinds they would be lost.

Maybe it's sort of like that.

Where did you get that information? Learning how to use different weapons "very well" by and of itself, implies knowledge. It's pretty much a historical fact that those guys are truly as close to being masters of their profession as one could get. I would suspect that they are the "Personality Types" that are always learning how to do their job better. So while someone on this site is trying to decide whether they're gonna pull a Busse or a .45, they'll kill ya with a toothpick.

Yes, it looks like a Scrapper 5 stuck through a note on a piece of wood in the preview of the next episode.;)

Dan Busse has confirmed that it is indeed a Scrapper 5 and there is more to come in movies, too. Wauseon will be famous. :D

Since Dave, Myke and gang aren't really lost, and aren't really trying to survive (except when Ruth got heat stroke), one should not get too worked up about their technique or equipment selection. Just my thinking. No doubt that many equipment manufacturers, include Busse, would like to get their goods on tv.

I bet there is a Gerber (or fill in the blank) forum somewhere with a thread just like this, with folks talking about why we don't see Dave using more Gerbers. Which, in their view, are clearly the "best" as well.

In addition to many fine Busses I've recently acquired, I did spring for the BHK knife Dave designed and uses on the show. It was a tad pricey, but it is also very nice. The rounded scales aren't much to look at (particularly in pictures) but this thing feels very, very good in the hands. I'd rather have it than the Gerber or Cold Steel kinives you see on many of these shows.
