Busses vs Mad Dog

I bought my NMFBM for about $800. I thought that was a decent amount for a blade. But it's a life long blade with a lifetime warrant and I think it is worth it. Some people might think that's too much, but a wise man once told me that a blade is worth what one is willing to pay for it.

I saw a Mad dog knife at 12 inches for $7,500. There was no titanium. No fancy handle. No fancy grind. O-1 tool steel. And I'm not sure what advantage this knife has over a Busse that would make it worth $6500 more? Do they have a 24 ct gold core? I'm not bashing these knives. I'm sure they are great knives. But how do you justify 12 inches of knife with no artistic work for over $7000? Any experience with this? And please let's not turn this into a bashing. I honestly want to know what they offer over a Busse?

Congrats on your NMFBM, post some pics of it! The NMFBM is my favorite "do anything" knife from Busse, big enough to chop well, but small enough (and thin enough) to do smaller tasks if you don't have a small knife on your person.

Mad Dog is not even in the same league as busse when it comes to toughness. I also don't think that they are in business.

Mad dog knives were very ergonomic and used O1 steel. My only complaint back then was that they hard chromed the O1 steel. Huge mistake. And this was one of the big internet threads that ended up in a big fight. One of many at the time. It didn't help that Cliff snapped a Tusk like a twig. Then got a replacement and broke that one to, lol. Then the internet forum was a buz. Most of the internet wars about mad dog were before bladeforums on the old knife forums that we were in right before the big split.

I got lucky enough to meet Kevin of Mad Dog knives back in 2004 through a mutual friend. I had a great time with him at his shop and home. He even gave me a mace that he made. It is nothing fancy, no Mad Dog markings on it . It was a gift from a new friend and is not even for sale. The point is I have nothing but respect for Kevin's work, but I don't own any of his blades because I cannot find them for a reasonable price. Nor do I want to pay the prices they command. I do own several Busse's, and I do see a few more in my future. Now when I look at fixed blade knives I compare them to my Busse's. I have given my son a couple of Busse's (TGM and Ratweiller) and now he is hooked. I think we have drank the Busse Kool Aid and there is no turning back now.

Hey man, again I bet these are great knives. But a 6 inch ferhman, 6 inch Busse, 6 inch MBB, 6 inch strider, 6 inch anything is under 1000$. And they use better steels, look to have better handle material etc. How can you ask 2500$ for no apparent advantage? When i buy a 6 inch custom with a crazy handle, infi, Z-wear PM or SV30 steel, a crazy grind etc, I expect to pay for those features. I see people using Tikume? or Timascus I understand that costs extra. Even folders can get fancy with their lock mechanisms. But a straight blade 6 inch knife with an all black handle for >$2k. How do you justify that?

I cannot justify it, that is why I don't own any. Like I said in my original post I respect the man. He treated me really well and invited me into his home and shop. We talked knives and guns. He has a great family. And if people are willing to pay the market prices for his blades I am happy for Kevin. But that is the great thing about this country that we have so many choices. There are so many talented knife makers making some awesome blades that we cannot live without.

Lol, no contest. :p The only, and I mean ONLY reason that one of those could even sell for remotely close to that much money would be due to lack of availability. If it is true they're out of business, then they are "collectible"...

They look like cold steel blades. $7000???

I would take a San Mai or cpm3V Cold steel over any mad dog for real hard use, IMO. I would bet a CS Warcraft in 3V would outlast an MD any day of the week.

I cannot believe anyone would pay those prices for MD knives.

^^^^ This. The minute they went out of business, I bet their price more than doubled.

Then there was the whole maxpedetion fiasco tied in as well. Mostly they had really poor business sense and practices.
