Hey y'all,

I'm a new member here (I've visited this forum here and there to get info about knives and learn about them before I purchase them) but now i'm officially a forum member. :D

I have a question....

just today after BBQ, i busted my Mora Companion. it's been with me for about 1.5 years and it served me wonders.
it's nothing big....handle cracked.
I was foolish and thought "how well would this work as throwing knife?" and since I used to throw knives around before, I gave it a go.
it was fabulous for a while until this one throw i realized as soon as i threw it, i knew i threw it wrong.

I'm thinking of remaking a handle for it. I have an old, unused hockey stick i got when I was in gr.7... I think it's hickory but not sure...

What's a good handle material (wood-wise), I'm not sure if Home Depot or Rona would sell hickory...?
How can i start about inserting the tang? do I cut ring through the handle/wood first? or do I crack the wood in half and glue it together (sandwiching the tang)?

thanks y'all :D

Welcome,
Personally, I'd just buy a new one. That's a lot of work for a knife that cheap. Dont get me wrong, I love em too, but I just chuck em when they've had their run... Unless you have a sentimental attachment or just for kicks wanna, it seems like a lot of work for something that cheap...
Good knifemaking tutorials in the stickies by the way.
Cheers!

If you have the parts that chipped out why not just glue them back in with some CA glue like the Gorilla made that is instant drying?
After it dries just clean the excess off.

@Frank, I was thinking of doing it but I couldn't find the busted piece.... the yard is full and green, and the piece is also MG, so it couldn't find it (yet)....I'm thinking of just putting some shoe-goo (glue thing) and just make it water proof or something and keep using it or something (until my other mora knives that i already purchased and ordered is shipped)

thanks anyways :)

Get a new one. I'd think the chip would eventually pop off. Keep the one you got, take a saw, and use the tang as your guide cutting the handle off. Cool DIY Project to make a custom handled one. No sense tossing out a good blade, and they are great blades.

Use some slow curing epoxy mixed with something that has a similar color to your handle.

There are two ways to look at this. 1. Is the knife's monetary value worth the effort to rehandle? Probably no. 2. Will you enjoy doing it, and learn something, keeping something out of a landfill? Probably yes.

I second the slower cure time epoxy fix.
Make a dam out of tape to match the thickness of the handle and pour it on.
I wouldn't even bother to try and match the color.
The slight oddity will be a good conversation starter and it will remind you of things past...
