But a folding knife won't work for that...

Very interesting story and this type of situation I think is actually a little common any many areas. Just depends where you live, but most of the time it is a pit bull that is reported to be involved in the story and usually the dog is shot or stabbed in defense of a person or sometimes another animal.

Some dogs are overly protective of their owners. This dog may have thought the other dog was threatening to its owner hence the attack, who knows. It doesn't always have to do with size or breed.

Unfortunately our dogs are aggressive with all strangers and dogs. I think it was because of their lack of social interaction growing up. My wife and I were both working full time jobs, going to school and raising kids. Going on walks or to the dog park was rarely on our to do list. I attribute that to us. However we know how they are so they don't go many places other than our fenced-in yard. Our 2 ladies are getting older now but if we ever get more dogs in the future I'll be sure not to repeat that mistake.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree, most of the time its NOT a pit, tho its understandable you think that because the news doesn't usually pick up the story when its a dachshund (the number one most vicious breed) attacks someone. More weidner dogs bite their owners than an other breed...

On the top 5 list of most vicious breeds (by number of attacks) pit's arnt even there, and you know every pit attack gets reported...

If you have to use a knife in a self defence situation the only time the attacker should be aware that you have a knife is after you've been stabbing them a few times.

I'm given to understand that if you have to stop a dog a knife close in is far more reliable than a gun as the dog is a small fast moving target and you're likely to miss. Of course overpenetration on the small body of a dog is likely too.

Hate the thought of killing a dog though. Dogs are much nicer than people.

This is a knife thread, not a pit bull thread.

All attacking dogs are fair game to be stabbed, clubbed, tased, sprayed or shot.

Have you ever watched training videos of dogs (usually police/MWD's) being pepper sprayed/CS'd? Almost zero effect, in CS gas they usually sneeze a time or to and arnt even effected, with pepper spray their eyes tear up but they sure dont stop, if I was ever under attack by any dog I would absolutely NOT reach for pepper spray under any circumstance.

But do they maul them beyond recognition? I don't think so. Pits were bred for a purpose. They have the massive jaw muscles to do serious damage and if something real or imagined trips their switch something or somebody's gonna die. Just the facts of life. I don't own a pit bull or rattlesnake or black widow spider. I also don't carry my 1911 in condition one. Just sayin. . . .

To me there's a big difference between a bite and an attack that possibly takes a life. I don't care if some tiny dog bites someone, I know a lot of tiny dogs in our area that are meaner than hell. I'm not saying it hasn't happened but I've never heard of a beagle or some other smaller breed dog attacking and killing someone. Attacks that cause death usually involve a pit bull. I'm not saying pit bulls are evil, just stating what I'm exposed to. If a beagle attacked and killed someone it would be on the news. If a beagle bites someone odds are it won't make the news. If a pit attacks and kills someone it would be on the news. If a pit bites someone odds are it makes the news. Why? Like I said, the attacks that cause death are tied to pit bulls. I know it's a touchy topic especially for pit bull owners but please know I'm not out to get pit bulls. Unfortunately for every good responsible pit owner there are more who aren't. Makes it an uphill battle for you.

You are correct sir. What's interesting is that most people don't realize that homeowner's insurance companies have specific lists of dogs that are excluded on their policies. Many people are grandfathered in or lie on the application, but if you have one of those dogs and it bites someone and they file a claim, it may not be covered and your insurance company may cancel you. I am an insurance agent so just giving a little advice.

As an animal lover I think it sucks that certain breeds are discriminated against. Its almost always the owner's fault, unless it is an adopted dog from a shelter and the dog had been abused etc. My parent's neighbors have 3 full size Dobermans and they are really nice dogs. They have a mini-pin that rules the roost and is vicious. It has mental problems from being abused by the previous owner. Statistics show that small dogs bite people many times more frequently than medium to large size dogs.

Back to the knives...

I would not hesitate to use my knife in the situation this guy was in, even if it was my lowly spyderco dragonfly.

:face palm:
To avoide unnecessary stress I'm goin to avoide this thread from this point forward...

If a weiner attacks a baby is that not worse than if a pit attack another dog or bites some guy? Like I said we have a 19 month old, a 6 & 9 year old and all our dogs are totally safe with them and all kids, my best friends weiner dog isn't aloud to come over anymore because he has went after our kids, including the baby and I don't want to have to kill my friends dog.

/my participation in this thread.

You can call it a trigger or whatever you like. There are just too many documented instances of cute little sweetums fluffy wuffy babykins "never done that before" pit bulls that have gone ape and killed a neighbor's pet or kid. Ignoring this fact is not BS. It's head-in-the-sand ignorance.

It worked on that 100 pound Boxer that tried to get me.
Took 3/4 of a 50 gram can, but it sure worked great. :)
It charged right to where I was, but I had pivoted offline. And then I leaned in and sprayed it right in the eyes from 3 inches away.

I had a knife in my other hand, but didn't have to use it due to pepper spray.
I heartily recommend it, because it worked when I needed it.

I had my left hand bit all to hell by a "nice" dog when I was a child. That is never happening again.

So... My take away in all this is; what brand of knife works best for weiner dogs?

Ya gotta be safe when out and about on the mean streets. ;):D

"You can't defend yourself against a dog with a knife".

Although I certainly recognize that neither a knife, nor any weapon, offers any guarantee of success when defending against a four-legged threat or a two-legged threat, obviously they can be very effective.

Who is saying you can't defend yourself with a knife? Every thread I've read people say it's just not wise to depend on a knife. Similar to the statement in your last sentence. Care to point where someone flat out said you CAN'T use a knife?

IMO this thread is trolling and only exists to stir people up and to make a "point."

A hot dog skewer. ;)

Awesome! :D

Indeed. Stick a fork in the dog and it's done!

Ever see one if full attack mode? It's terrifying!
