Butchers axe?

Probably made in Nashua, NH between 1852 and 1890. Got some history there.

Yes, it's a butcher's axe. I believe the poll was used chiefly as a striking surface for a mallet when making cuts that needed precision to cleave properly.

Yes, that poll looks like it was made for striking. With that the long handle also makes sense.
