Can any of you folks tell me how the butter and molasses grips were made on the Schrade knives. I have just purchased a 234K and would like to know some history on the manufacturing process of these handles. Here is a pic.
thh 234k goes way back as the 2344k. the handle were cel wich was changed to plastic. As early as 1954 Schrade and Imperial were using new plastic products that promised longer life than cell.
Yours was made between in 1973 or 1974. The Schrade Walden stamp ended in 1973, and the 234K pattern was last made in 1974.
INFORMATION UPDATE
My source must have been wrong. From a very reliable source: "The actual last catalog is 75 but they kept making them thru 78 with only a single 1 made in 1979."
This would indicate there might be some stamped 234K with a SCHRADE / USA 234K all on the front side. I have an 896K like that. I have one 234K just like XBXB. The 234K is on the back.
Both guys LRV and ORVET have provided a ton of info for me, as well as CODGER, whose research for Schrade is endless here on the forum. I add to this list, WAYNORTH, with his huge supply of old Schrade eye candy and knowledge about the old stuff.
OK I'm understanding. From now on I will refer to you as Dewey Decimal Irv the Schrade Librarian. By the way I got the knife today It is a real beauty. The Steel is very bright and shines. Not at all like the Carbon steel that is used on Schrade knives. I'm not sure what kind of steel is used but I'll find out when and if it develops a patina. Thanks fellas:thumbup:
