Does anyone have experience with custom makers who make butterfly knives? I have a few names, but they are only that to me right now. I heard Ken LArgin was popular back in the day I have a hard time contactig him now. I have also exchanges some emails with Ralph Turnbull but have not seen any of his works.

I think Ellis is too expensive for me and other than that I am open to any suggestions sirs.

You can rest assured that Ralph Turnbull's is magnificent. But don't plan on anything without a comma in the price tag for the balisongs. I understand he may be working one up, but you can expect mop if not diamonds! I just don't see the attraction, but if I did, I would go for RT for the high end.

PS
Just remembered that my wife's uncle has a Ken Largin, Kelgin, butterfly knife, brass handles with ebony inserts, drop point blade, 440C steel that he would sell for $90, nice knife. Let me know if you'd like it and I'll put you in touch with him.

Oops chefget beat you to it, he has dibs on the knife, I need to get a scan of it first and send to him and if he decides that he doesn't want that one, I'll post that decision here so you guys/gals will know it's available again.

If you want a "using" butterfly you may want to look at Fred Perrin of "La Griffe" fame. He makes 'em and he's the most amazing manipulator of a butterfly knife that I've ever seen.

Thanks very much sirs =). I appreciate the note. G2, I think I emailed Mr. Hinderer and yes I did say G2 sent me but he was not in the market for Butterflies but out of courtesy he put me on his list =).

Sucks someone beat me to it.. put me on the list for that Kelgin knife if the deal doesn't pull thru.. my email is soo@andrew.cmu.edu

I also own a La Griffe, and yes I already wrote him for a griffe fly ^_^. No reply though =~(.

Back in 1991, when I was living in the US, I bough a knife from John Salley, from Tipp City, OH, and remember to have seen a nice balisong from this maker in a Fighting Knives magazine of the time. While he is not a very well known maker, I´m sure you will like the quality of his work. By the way, he is a Guild member, too.
I haven´t heard of him for a while but he is still listed at knives '99 and you can get his phone number and adress from there. I would have posted it but don´t have it at hand here in the store.
Best regards and Merry Christmas.

Walter Erickson used to make some beauties.A lot of custom makers don't advertize that they make butterflies but if you call them they might. If you have any of the old Knives annual books by Ken Warner you can find some.

ROBB, I had gotten word that Erikson has retired and does not do knives no more. Ken Largin's email seems to be down and he hasn't returned my phonecalls.. well I am not in my apartmet now I am at home so I can't say..

and where do i get this knives 99, Ivan?

You can get your copy from Amazon -I´m sure they have it and maybe they already have received Knives 2000. You will do everybody a favor to everybody if you buy from a knifemaker´s site connected to amazon, like Don Fogg´s.
Or I can post it here by monday, anyway. But if you don´t have any edition of Knives, I urge you to buy one.

If Walter Erickson has retired it is a shame.
I have held a few of his butterfly knives and they are awesome. He used to make some very interesting blades. I remember picking up a circumsicion(spl?) bladed butterfly. He made a few of them for Jewish Rabbi's. They were unique and very eye-catching.

SniperBoy, I just got off the phone with Rick Hinderer and he says that he is going ahead with the Butterfly project, starting out with some skeleton models and then on to some inlaid handles, first ones might have carbon fiber inlays, which sound nice.
Said that the handles will be stainless steel and they will be screw construction with the bearing being tool steel so they will be pretty tough knives. Tried to get a date out of him but he said keep watching the mags as he will be promoting them once they get started.

Sounds pretty good to me!

Walter Erickson is still making butterflys here in Michigan.
His e-mail address is wberic@racc2000.com
Phone 989-785-5262
He quit the guild when they forced him to remove them from the table in Orlando. The knives were legal in the state of Florida at the time.

Give Darrel Ralph a try, try his web site or Kevins at the Edge Equipment who shows his Balisong design.
