Buttheads abound...

almost forgot to ask: production guns, which are more accurate? AR16 style with .223 or M1A with .308? 10 years ago I wouldn't have considered this a question....

Both types in any form can be extremely accurate. What it comes down to is maintenance. I am not talking about cleaning and that type of stuff. I am talking about keeping the total system operating in accurate trim. The Army Marksmanship Unit has gone to the AR types because they require about 1/10th the maintenance to keep functioning accurately. In respect to what I have just said if you are not intimately familiar with the finer points of tuning an M1A and keeping it in tune then I would definitely suggest AR as your best bet. If you prefer 308 over 223 check out the SR-25 from Knights Armament Co. or the AR-10 from Armalite. One final thought every gunsmith as an opinion and that is all this is. Hope this helps.

The best description of a crooked politician ( I know, that's being redundant ) is:

"He's so crooked that if you fed him a nail he'd sh-- a screw."

Military marksmen are breaking all the old records previously held by the M14/m1A .308 with competition AR's with heavy rates of twist and non military standard .223 heavy bullets.

...coming out a screw...now, that is sad.

I'm partial to antique .38s. Hell, mine is so accurate I can get all six shots in a three foot circle at 10 yards.
