Button Compass

Do not buy the Brunton watch/button compass. Made in china.
Mine lasted less than three months.
Got a big bubble now, won't turn at all.

I have Suunto clipper and like it a lot. I also have the Sun "advertising" keychain compass that you can get with different brand names. Mine says REI but that's only because I didn't have anything esle to use the rebate on. You can get them at walmart I would imagine with a different brand name on them. It will probably say Coleman. They both seem to point in the same direction as my Ranger so that's good enough for me.

button compasses in general I don't trust, just pack the extra space and weight and get a commenga-bombproof, waterproof, and makes night/underwater navigation a cinch.

If you want a couple extra no-hassle and slightly larger than "button" sized, get the Suunto Clipper and a K&M Extra Length Matchsafe with a Suunto in the cap of it. Add a reliable baseplate, lensatic or matchbox type like a Recta DP for your main compass and you're set.

As for all of the other comments, most of your 10 - 20mm compasses both wet and dry are made in china now.

The Peyser-NATO Brass Button Compass is pricey but very reliable.

When you go to the store for a compass, check them against each other, and hold them away from the metal racks, etc. I've seen 4-5 of the same point in different directions. Sometimes the ones WITHOUT liqiud damping seem to be more accurate. I've even drilled a small hole in one to let the liqiud out. You have to wait half a minute for it to settle, but the needle swings freely. This is key to all compasses . Most of the button compasses I've seen were really sticky. I settled on a Suunto ( the one with the thermometer)
