I would really love to learn how to make button lock folding knives.

So anyone with experience with, or knowledge of, or even with cited sources please let's hear it all!

I have a plethora of William Henry button lock knives. I love them, but they are set up for north paws (righties). The tolerances involved are quite tight, and the parts are hard to make. I can send some pictures if you give me your email address.

If it's possible to get in on the pics I'd really appreciate it. I'm hearing up for 2 folder designs now and they're both button locks.

I've seen that and will likely be getting parts from there. I just wanted to see more examples without having to buy a model to take apart. They seem pretty straight forward though so we'll see. Thanks count.

I keep hearing how difficult these are to make.
Seeing pictures doesn't make it seem like it'd that bad, I must be missing something.

Interesting. It may be difficult because the blade pivot motion and the need for a locked closed position. Not really my biggest problem.

Edit** If you fond a good tutorial please let me know.

I modify DDR3-BL, SS-3.0 and SS-2.0 kits from Knifekits. I re-shape the frames and blades, do extensive filework, and other embellishments. Often I make new damascus blades, and bolsters in damascus or mokume. I change a lot of the assembly screws to gold plated or black oxide types, and file work the pivot screws and the buttons, often adding a matching faux left side button. As said, the tolerances are tight, so having the liners and parts all together in one batch is simpler than me making them from scratch. Then I finish them up with mammoth scales or high grade burl wood and they are really nice custom automatic knives. Others I fit with Micarta or G-10 scales for LEOs, military, and paramedics.

I haven't done it, but I think you could convert one to a leftie button with little more than a counter-top mini mill or a good drill press. The frames provided are easily reversed. The bolsters would be the only parts to modify.

I would suggest you get a kit or two from knifekits to see how they are make and work. They have three sizes and a couple different blade options. They sell all sorts of BL and auto parts and springs, as well as the matching drills/cutters for making the spring pocket.

Don Robinson has a CAD drawing of a button lock available. He frequents a couple other forums. I haven't made one but have purchased the drawings.
