Buy a knife for the blade steel......

I think a lot of us have done it, bought a knife for a steel we wanted to try.

The knives I've bought in a premium steel, I really haven't used hard enought to get benefit from spending the extra $$ for. S90v, cpm m4,and m390

would be some of the steels that I've bought to try out. Ya, I know they cut better and hold and edge longer but is it really worth the extra $$.

Anyone else do the same thing, are you glad or sorry you did ?..................

My name is Dave...and I am a steelaholic .....
Yes - I have done it, and in some cases was not impressed with the performance, but I was never sorry I bought it, as I did get to try something new. Then I would try to determine if it was a heat treat problem, or a geometry issue...
It is part of the fun..er.... obsession. ;)

I buy most the Spyderco Mule Teams to try out different steels and compare them. I also bought the forum Native for the S110V and picked up one of Big Chris's personal 10V Mules for the same reason. I feel that experience has helped me make better informed custom knife buying decisions. I'm also a sharpening enthusiast and enjoy working with a variety of steels.

I bought a Manix 2 in S90V and I'm glad I did, it's a much better knife than the regular Manix 2 (mine's the older one in 154CM). The steel is just one of the features that I feel is an improvement over the regular one: it's lighter, the full flat grind cuts better than the shallow hollow grind on the regular version. I would have bought jt just for those two things.

My S30V Blur was a good investment, I didn't much care for the steel used in the regular production Blur at the time (440A) and was glad to have the option to get it with a different blade steel.

I bought one of the Spyderco Lum Chinese knives just to try out ZDP189, and while I would probably like the knife just as much in good old vg-10, I consider it a good purchase. I got to play around a bit with a new steel, and add something a bit different to my collection at this point I pretty much had it with black FRN or G10 and VG-10, and enjoy looking for knives with new materials.

There are a few other examples. In general, I'm pleased with them all because utility is just a part of my knife happiness equation.

I do regret spending the extra money on Leatherman tools with premium steel knife blades. I never carry them as my main cutting tool, and they always get the crappy jobs that I don't want to use a super sharp knife for, so the 420hc blade on my SuperTool actually works better for my needs than the S30V blade on my Charge Tti.
