Really just curious how many of you cut your own scales and how many buy scales? Or how many of you cut your blocks or buy blocks?

The answer for me has been on simple working knives I cut my scales or blocks. I can get a 1.5"x 8" block of cocobolo locally for around 3 bucks and its good stuff now I can comfortable cut 4 sets of scales out of that thats 0.75$ a set but some buy sets of cocobolo for 7or 8 bucks a set of course their flat but if I cut them right it doesn't take much to get them that way. Now I'm not one to price shop or complain about prices and I realize that the supplier is trying to make money just like we do everyday but what do you guys do.

Just trying to start a little conversation maybe help out a newbie by talking about it:)

Both. I have a great stock of wood now. Most of it is in big chunks. Atlanta is blessed with great hardwood dealers. Also, my grandad and his brothers did a great job of not allowing good wood that died in ice storms to rot. There are drying sheds all over his property where he set aside wood that had died, and he had taken to the sawmill. Lots of walnut in that stash.

I scrounge wood from wherever possible, and mostly cut my own. I have bought a few sets, but much prefer the home cut for the price.

I cut my own from wood I get from Windsor Plywood. I don't have a wood-cutting band saw, so I cut mine using a Sawzall that I have mounted to the underside of my work bench. :o:DThe blade protrudes from a slot in the table top. Works surprisingly well for cutting thick hardwood. Better I think than one of the cheap low amp table-top band saws that probably wouldn't have the juice to cut it. Can't afford a "real" wood-cutting band saw as of yet. Oh well.

You can also cut your own scales to be more selective about appearance, and not just yield.

Take care, Craig
