buyer beware! Fake Southards on the bay

Shepard,

The pics are pretty bad so it's hard to tell on this one. Was it the grind line near the tang that gave it away for you or something else?

It is the CF that he calls brown CF when a real only comes in brown peel ply G10. He also lists it as coming from China. Also, the "Spyderco CTS-204P" is not right either. There is a real in depth analysis in the stickied fake thread about these fake Southards.

The printing on the tang is wrong as well. As mentioned already, the Southard is G-10, not "brown carbon fiber". Good looking out ShepardCC.

It's pretty sad that these fakes are actually getting better. Not to mention $170.00 down the tubes for a fake. Notice how the seller describes this knife.
V
Spyderco Southard (( Style )) Flipper

Also if you zoom in on the titanium frame lock side you'll see its not stone washed.

And as others have said it comes with Carbon fiber instead of the real ones brown peel ply g10

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm not familiar enough with the Southard to know the difference by looking at poorly taken pictures. I did check the sticky and there is good info there, but without ever handling either one it's difficult to know. What I do know is that I will never buy a knife on ebay. I just hope that amazon doesn't become as bad, because then I may be in trouble.

Not all Ebay knives are a scam. After a while it's pretty easy to weed out the fakes especially with great threads like these around to reference.
There are just too many Spydercos I want that are almost impossible to find elsewhere so I exercise every caution when buying anywhere.

You can find fakes on amazon too. Just make sure the seller has a good rep and regularly deals with knife sales.
That being said this guy selling the fakes has a good rep but doesn't deal in knives regularly. He's all over the board with what he sells which is the first red flag. Who buys 5 $240 knives to sell at $170??

Is there any way to leave a comment or question on the listing that would let other people viewing it know it's fake? I don't know anything about eBay, just a thought.

It's funny you created this topic because I reported this exact listing yesterday. It's ashamed we didn't see it sooner and he already sold a few of them.

Agreed. I've made a habit of taking the username on eBay, putting it into google and see what comes up. In my experience, five minutes of quick research can save a buttload of heart- and wallet-ache. Sure, I might not get as good of a deal, but I'd rather lose $10-$20 on the price and know I'm getting the legitimate article.

I also just stumbled across this dubious fellow and reported it as well. Hopefully they take action soon, with 2 sold and 30 people watching the item. It's a shame. If they only put the effort spent on defrauding people towards making an honest living and contributing to society...

Lance, you can certainly report the listing. I've reported dozens of listings for fake/clone/counterfeit items in the past. I'd be surprised if half of them were taken down. The issue is that eBay has a shoddy system in place for reporting, and always has and it's not conducive to details.

Seller removed item listing. It's a good fake for someone who doesn't know the details. He even has a Spydie red/black box.

There's been plenty of fake Para 2's as well, and its hard to tell the difference.
It doesn't seem to do much good to report these to ebay. They don't seem to care as long as they're making money.
There are a few highly copied knives I would never buy from ebay unless I knew the seller.

I've bought a few knives on the bay for a few bucks cheaper than other retailers. Some due diligence on your part and it's easy to see which dealers are legit.

If shipped from China, it's a fake. If it's substantially cheaper and in "new" condition, then I'd be suspicious as well.

They come with the box from where he bought them. He paid around $70 for each knife with the box and shipped.

In fairness to eBay, they do respond to complaints by the owner of the intellectual property being pirated if the owner has registered with their VERO program, although their response is not always quick enough. They pretty much ignore accusations of IP piracy from anyone else because there was too much abuse in the past by sellers making false accusations in order to torpedo their competition. These threads do serve a useful purpose. Spyderco is registered with the VERO program, and it's easier for Spyderco to monitor the forums and report the violators than for them to monitor eBay.

Glad to hear it Paul, I figured if the owner of a company/product makes such a request, it would be in their best interest to follow up asap. However, the rest of us get ignored for the most part.
