I would like admin to contact me regarding a sale that was not consummated as the buyer's email was hacked (and my BF account apparently impersonated). Buyer sent funds to unknown (to me) Venmo after having an email conversation with person unknown to me. Only 9 minutes elapsed between the time buyer posted on my forum sale site and PM'd me and my reply. Sent him my PayPal info and asked if he preferred Venmo. Didn't hear back (this was Thursday) so sent a PM later that afternoon. Still didn't hear back and sent another inquiry this afternoon (Saturday). Buyer responded with some screen shots which are too small to make out the conversation but with the name of the Venmo account he sent funds to. Not sure at all how they did this.

This scam has been going on for months, if not a couple of years. There are many posts and threads about this within "Feedback" which we have been warning members about continuously.

You didn't provide a link to the relevant sale thread...which would be pertinent to any further discussion.

We cannot read your PMs (now known as DMs) unless you add one or more of us to the conversation. (They are "private" messages.)

Yes, I have some simple advice. Only communicate by DM. Make that clear in the sale thread. Both of you have those privileges and neither of you should have expected to be contacted by email, which must have been posted by the purchaser in an earlier thread on the site.

The bad guys can't read your DMs but they can send emails if you post your email publicly...and pretend to be the legit seller.

Spark and we, the staff, have posted warnings about this everywhere on the site. We can't help that some folks don't read the warnings which are posted.

For instance, look at the banner at the top of this page.

There's no need to do so at this point. It's obvious where the fraud occurred. The buyer should make an attempt with his financial institutions to see if he can get his funds back. (PayPal, bank, credit card company etc.)

There is nothing that we can do about the fraud as the scammer doesn't have to be a member to see someone's publicly posted email address and shoot them an email pretending to be the seller. Unfortunately, it could have been easily avoided.
