The past few years have been tight, money-wise with our family going back to basics and me taking a leave of absence from work to be Mr. Mom for our son. It was a great time and I spent many, many hours walking through the parks and trails with my little critter on my back. It was a great time and I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything.

It did make spending a challenge. Without my salary for the better part of two years I had to curtail much of my spending and the toys I would have liked to buy had to stay out of reach. I did have an appreciation for the simpler things and I found that my old gear was more than up to the challenge.

Fast forward to now and I'm back at work with my paycheck going to work to replenish our savings and get us back to a more comfortable level. I'm also able to spend with a little more reckless abandon. It was weird to start to drop large chunks of money for fun stuff...like new knives:D although I recently spent more on outdoor gear with two purchases than I spent in the last two years!

Anyway, to keep this post reasonably short (yeah right!) I just got a Koster Bushcraft in 3V and green canvas micarta and even though it's my most expensive knife right now, I feel not a bit of buyers remorse. It's quality stuff and I can't wait to get it outdoors to put it to use. I still love Moras and other inexpensive blades, but this one (and its bigger brother the BushMaster I ordered) will be money well spent. Not a twinge of guilt found anywhere. They'll be knives that I'm sure I'll pass down to my son one day.

Um, just don't tell the wife about the BushMaster, ok?;)

First, congrats on being back to work and having the ability to buy new toys.

Second, I'm about to feel the pain you've already been through. My wife was just let go from her job (auto related). We knew it would happen sooner or later, we were just hoping "later". Anyway, she went back to college last semester and will be pursuing a nursing degree. I think we are just going to scrimp in order for her to go full time and finish as soon as possible.

Luckily, we have always been smart with our money. We have a pretty decent savings and other than our house we don't have any debt. It shouldn't be as bad as what some have had to go through but - it will cut out my "fun" stuff for awhile.
