Buyer's Remorse

I've bought a bunch of knives in the last year or so. I'm up to around 45-50 now, which I didn't have any idea until I actually counted. Nothing really too fancy, but I've spent a lot of money for me. I have this thing about "deals" that I can't pass up. I'm a sucker for a good knife at a good price.

Now I look at them and theres only about 3 or 4 that I actually use. Does anybody get buyer's remorse like that. If I had saved the money I spent on those knives, I easily could have bought a fancy custom or something like that but I seem to have bought indiscriminately. The worst thing is I still want to buy, buy buy more knives!!

Yep been there done that. I would suggest upgrading to a Gold membership and selling off some of them in the Exchange section here. I have been selling/buying on eBay for years but I've come to learn it's better to deal with people on BladeForums.

You mean knives with no collector interest, no aesthic value, no possibility that you'll ever use them, completely uninteresting, and you are totally sorry you bought them? Out of 180-ish knives, I have two or three that fit into that category.

Sell them, give them away, or offer them for trade; someone will appreciate your unwanted knives, guaranteed.

Best Wishes,
Bob

I think someone needs a Gold membership ;)

I too have suffered the same as you. Here's what I did.

Bought I nice quality knife, in my case a sebenza. Realized that almost any new knife that came along is not as nice as the knife I already have. Realized that any particular knife I thought I wanted wouldn't be as nice in real life as I thought it would be.

Those two thoughts pretty much keep new knife buying to a minimum. and did away with 95% of buyers remorse.

Oh and I pretty much sold off everythign else.

Well, I think buying a lot of knives in a short period of time is a healthy exercise for any knife nut just starting out. It gives you a large base of experience and helps guide you to what you like and don't like, as well as teaches you (hopefully) to differentiate between what is hype and what is valid while reading the forums.

The next step, as others have said, is to sell off the knives you'll probably never use or don't appreciate as much as you did when you were "younger".

I curb my buying because I only keep knives I use, and I have had almost every knife known to man so I have definite opinions on what works for me, so I know what to avoid.

Like you though I have a hard time passing on a great deal, probably my biggest downfall ;)

My buying trend of late is to scour the selling venues for a great deal, I mean really great deals. When you can pick up a $500 knife for $150 on eBay it is much much more enjoyable to own and use :D

I've been there. I just started to turn over anything that didn't get used and get nicer stuff.

Now I'm down to only a few production knives and focusing more on customs.

Gold membership sounds like a good idea.

Buying all the knives has helped me get a lot of knowledge about what I like and don't like. Maybe "remorse" isn't the right word. I know that I don't regret any of my Himalyan Import stuff!!

I also have a problem with selling something once I buy it

Hear you on that one!!! I have 70'ish in my collection/accumulation(folders only). In the beginning, I was buying whatever caught my fancy/on sale. (you know - this Buck 110 is pretty nice, I wonder what the other Bucks are like? ;) ) The last few, I've been getting more and more selective. I found that I was using certain ones more than others, and just started to get stuff that I knew I would use. I know I won't stop, but just be more selective. :D I just took delivery of a Spydie Endura and Becker BK11, so I should be good a couple of weeks or so until my BM 550 shows up. Then a Spydie Para Military or Manix, and that should be it for a couple of months (and if you believe that ...:D ) Regrets on any that I've bought? Sort of - I heard just how junky some of the "cheap" blades and bought a couple. Well, y'all were right, but then I just use them to scrape expoxy, etc. Compared to these, AUS-6A acts like VG-10!!! Sometimes, I think they get dull just sitting there!! The fun begins when you have more than a few that you use all time and "need" to carry them all the time. I just hit this yesterday...I think I need to wear cargo pants all the time now :D

Just think, once you sell off a few you can buy more and justify it easier.

Go for the gold, it's worth it. :D

Cargo pants ...

Victorinox Classic, Leatherman Blast, Strider tanto SnG, and a Jot Singh Khalsa knife necklace. I know what's missing .. I don't have a small fixed blade on me!

Oh yes, I have done this! Man, the knives I've been through could fill a bank vault. Only recently have I begun to "settle down" somewhat and determine to keep only the ones I'll actually carry. What this boils down to is about 4 or 5 knives! Still get those impulse buy moments but have found that if I continue to tell myself that I need to wait for the custom I have coming, I can generally pass it up. Just a matter of will power!!!  :D All though I do really need a Spyderco Civilian plain edge with kydex neck sheath!

Have I ever regretted buying a knife? Not for a long time.

There was a little boot dagger I bought when I was in high school. Let's just say that it did not stand up to being thrown very well, and I broke the point off after a couple of months.

Then there was the POS Rambo-style "survival" vaguely-knife-like object I bought, also when I was in high school. At least it gave me the chance to learn how to sharpen freehand by trial and error without actually damaging a real knife. And the sheath lent itself well to an upside-down shoulder carry. This was a couple decades before Columbine and twist-off bottlecaps, so my *coughalsounderagecoughcough* drinking buddies didn't wig too badly when I pulled it out from under my trenchcoat and use it to open my beer. Still, it was quite obviously a total ripoff that was completely inadequate for its alleged purpose, which really annoyed me.

One knife purchase that I do regret is three Winchester skeleton clip framelock folders that I bought at a local Wal-Mart's. I REALLY regret not buying every single one they had (they sold out in about 24 hours and haven't had any since). The were the best $7 knife I ever bought; they open smoothly and easily, lockup solidly, sharpened up to hair-popping levels very easily, and have holes in the frame that are too small for my fingers. And despite some serious Googling, I can't find them anywhere online.

Here's a pic of a friend waving one around:"Winchester" is printed on the other side of the blade.

If anyone could steer me towards more, I'd be grateful.

Art,my friend YOU with only 4 or 5 knives! Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! !!WithYOU it won't last,YOU HAVE BEEN ,IN THE PAST & ARE STILL "DOOMED"!! :D 4 OR 5
KNIVES!!....YOU!! YEAH,Riiiight!! :D
Be safe,
Jim

When I first joined these forums in 2000, I bought just about everything that I could get my hands on. I had just about every MOD, BM, Microtech, etc... I had the boxes stacked neatly in my closet, and one or two times a week I would go in the room where they were, and would take each one out of the box and play with it for a few minutes and put it away. I just wasn't happy with any certain one of them. My EDC, which was a BM Aries, was the only one I really cared about. I have since sold them off, and started with some customs, and am building a collection that way. It takes longer, but is far more rewarding. You will find you niche in the knife collecting hobby. If you have remorse, just get a gold membership and sell some of them off. Get a few customs and be done with it. I would keep one or two around for users, and you should be happier.

Art won't buy another knife until he has to change his underwear.....THEN it will be time for him to buy another one. ;)

Sure, I've regretted many, many past knife purchases. Now I concentrate on buying ones I will actually carry/use.....1 and 2 layer Victorinox SAKs. No matter what I've ever bought, I keep coming back the SAKs.

Does this look like buyers remorse?
