Buying a Custom at 14?

Ok guys, I want some opinions please. I'm not sure how many of you know but I'm 14. The California Custom Knife Show is coming up, and two of my friends who are also 14 are going in addition to me. They asked if I was going to buy anything custom, as in $700+, and I said no. I said I don't make enough money to compensate for the amount I'd spend, (neither do they) and there's no benefit to buying a knife that expensive at age 14 (or really at any age in my opinion. But especially this young). There are much better things to spend money on in my opinion. Then they started laughing at me and said it's stupid and pointless to go to the show then, and said I'm not a knife guy if I don't want to buy knives.

So what do you think about spending that much money on a knife?

Please note this thread isn't to prove anything to them. I'm just curious what you think. It's not going to get me to change my mind either. Again, I'm just curious.

I own multiple custom knives and I've never been to a knife show. If you don't want to pay big money than don't, it's as simple as that. That shouldn't keep you from going and experiencing something that you enjoy and are interested in however. I think I would also go to a show just to look and see some of the phenomenal works of art in person.

I find exotic cars interesting, but I can't afford a $100,000+ car. Does that mean I can't be a car guy?

First off. Good on ya! You know what you want and you understand your limitations. Your friends are gonna have to learn that lesson the hard way I guess. That is, if they ever get their heads out of their butts!
If you like knives, and you enjoy seeing all the different offerings that are out there, and you actually get to handle them and ask questions in a friendly environment. So then why the heck wouldn't you want to attend a show.

Right now I own 1 custom with more on the way, and I am by no means a wealthy person. I just made the decision about a year ago that Instead of buying 4-6 knives in the $150-$300 range. I would much prefer 1-2 customs a year. To me it was worth it. I would much rather spend the extra money for my ONE custom lefty Andre Thorburn L36 than get the new BM Loco, Spyderco Slysz Bowie, and ZT 0808 & 0452 combined. That's just me though, and I know other people look at it in the exact opposite way. If that's what floats your boat, then you keep sailing in that direction. Who am I to tell you my way is better?

Bottom line is, do what you want, get what you like, and have some respect for the preferences of others.
Have fun at the show.

Yup [emoji6] . They seem to think I should only buy something if they like it... I bought a Sebenza and right now it's the only knife I own since I sold everything else. They loved everything about the Sebenza until I got one. They hadn't even handled it before they started hating on it. Oh well. One day they'll figure it out. :D

Sounds to me like you need to get new friends.

As far as spending $700 on a knife, first let me say that if others want to do it then more power to them. Their money, their business.

As for myself- I'm 45 years old, I own a thriving business, I own my own house, a car, and two motorcycles (all fully paid for), and I have enough money in the bank that I can sleep well at night and not have to worry about paying the bills. And yet, although I could afford $700 for a knife, there's no way I would pay that much. In fact, I wouldn't pay half that much. If I ever win the lottery things might be different, but as of today I can't justify spending that much for a sharpened piece of steel.

At the age of 14 I think that there are other much more important things that you could be saving money for. Like for example- wheels. If you haven't yet realized the value of having your own motorized transportation, and the freedom and benefits it will provide you, you should very soon.

Wheels can be expensive. Between the vehicle itself, repairs, tires, gas, insurance, etc, you'll need every penny you can scrape together just to keep your ride on the road. While your friends are sitting at home alone on Saturday night fondling their expensive knives, you'll be taking your girlfriend out in your car.

Save your money for important things. And get smarter friends.

The problem with custom anything is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What you think looks gorgeous and serves a useful purpose could be absolutely trash to someone else. My point? At 14, you're not likely to really know what you need/want from a custom, and if your tastes change, you could be stuck with a $700 face-value knife that's worth $200 on the street. An extreme example perhaps, but you get my drift.

When I was your age, I spent my time and money trying lots of different but inexpensive things to figure out what I liked. Now, I know exactly what to look for, and am willing to pay for those items when they come up (if the budget allows)!

This. Although I'm young enough to sort of remember being fourteen, and I thought I knew a lot more, back then. But with the benefit of hindsight, I realize it was only because I didn't know how complicated the world really was.

I think your perspective is more mature than theirs, which leads to this. The ball-busting doesn't seem to bother you, so I would say give back what you get, and in a couple years, you can rub it in their faces when they realize you were right, all along!

14, huh? Aren't you gonna want a car in a couple years? ;) better save that cash, and do whatever you can to get more. A car, and the freedom that brings..leads to VERY..er..interesting..times for a young man..uh..with the ..er..opposite sex..who would MUCH rather see your new wheels than your $700 custom knife, trust me.
everyone has a friend or two like that, that wants to compete at everything, and anything you can do, he can do it better, or spent more, or his is nicer, his girl is prettier, etc. Don't fall into the trap. Just say "That's great Bill." or, Fred, or whatever his name is and when he fails to get the satisfaction from it, he'll find other targets for his foolishness. It's called "keeping up with the Joneses", and people go into serious debt over it. Sounds like you're already on your way to being your own man, keep it up.

Sorry kid. Not feeding in. Just in case anyone forgot, anus-tart here weaved such a web of lies about himself he had to have a new profile started:

Why should we believe any of this new scenario?

If any of this is true, seems like you need to not care what others think of you. In fact, you should apply that to all aspects of your life, including your presence here. That is what got you your current rep.

Couldn't have said it any better. I'm in the same boat as Killgar and I've set a 300.00 limit for a knife and don't like spending that much. Plenty of great knives out there for 200. and less, even 100. And less.
I'm impressed, as a 14 year old you've got much more on the ball than I did at that age. Listen to your conscience your on the right track.

I go to knife shows because I like to look at knives and talk to knife people.

Peer pressure is the lowest form of persuasion.

You can certainly find many hand made knives in the $250-$350 range if you have the desire to make that plunge.

As to your history, be a good boy and everything works out. ;)

The magic of common sense....

At 14, I would rather buy a decent baseball glove. Don't waste that kind of money on a knife. Get a RAT2 or maybe a Spyderco PM2, save some money to spend on girls, and you'll be quite happy.

Thanks for sharing this, Cray!

I read the first page of the link that you posted, & busted out laughing! :D
My brain, didn't register the other possible ways to apply his user name: A NU START...AKA: ANUS TART!

Putting 2+2 together (the fact that he was previously banned here) makes this 14 year old boy story inquiring about spending $700 on a custom, a bunch of B.S.!

Good luck kid- & thanks for the laugh! ;)
