Buying a similar knife to what you already own

Do any of you guys buy knives that are similar in style/use to ones you already own? I really want the cryo g10 or the knockout, but can't seem to justify them as I already own a skyline. The cryo is smaller and heavier, with worse steel, and I don't think it could do anything my skyline couldn't. The knockout only has a slightly bigger blade, with the same steel, but could probably be used a little rougher. Do you guys catch and release some knives? Do you buy any for no other reason than to fondle them?

I thought most people do things like that. If you've found a knife you really like, it makes sense to try something very similar: it may actually be better.

I got my regular Skyline, then the BladeForums Skyline, the original Cryo, then the G10 Cryo. I've lots of similar knives. I've also got about 20+ SAKs so yes I can safely say I do get lots of similar style knives.

I totally do my around the house edc's are a Delica and ukpk both exact same size. My daily edc is a mini Barlow and alox cadet both the same size!

I have many knives in the same size range.

Sage 2 and Caly 3 are very similar knives, but they look different, and have different materials and locks.

at the 3.5-3.6" range I have ZT 550, ZT 801, BM 581, Spyderco Southard, Lg Sebenza, Lg Sebenza, BM Kulgera. I am going to try to slim down this category because I don't even carry knives that large everyday

for small BM's I have the 707, 556, 586 all with 2.9" blades, but all with different steels. The 586 is my favorite of the 3 right now.

Interesting question. From traditionals to "tanks", tactical to "gentlemen's," bushcraft to '"urban survival," I try to keep a variety of styles and sizes of folders rather than having several clones of the same brand, size or style.

For instance, I am deciding between a Microtech Socom and an Emerson CQC as my next purchase. I already own a knife with similar lines/look and quality as the Socom (an original Masters of Defense Watson Trident folder). I'll probably go with the Emerson to keep my collection diverse as currently I don't have another folder of the Emerson "style."

I find that having five Sebenzas with different blades or designs...or ten Spydercos, looking like a lineup of children from the same mother doesn't do it for me. I"m not a 'brand collector"--I do research to find what I feel is the best representative of different categories/styles/types/sizes of knife then I buy it.

This way all my knives are somewhat different from the others, each with a different purpose or 'strength,' and I'm not looking at too much of one gene in the DNA of the collection.

I don't do a lot of catch and release as I prefer permanence in my purchases, hopefully validated by good research prior to buying. And yeah, I find that I fondle some of them now and then once I receive them.

I actively try to round out my selection of tools as much as I can so I'm most efficiently increasing my overall range of utility. :)

If you like it, purchase it. I own 3 leeks, 2 1760 skylines and one 1084 skyline. And im plotting on getting either the g10 cryo or a cryo 2; but being the knife addict i am its safe to say i will eventually own both models. I also preordered the kershaw cqc-1k, and look to get the 4k,5k,and 6k.

I have a bunch of knives in the same size range, but in a variety of different steels/handle materials/lock configurations. I have found the size I generally like for most knives that I will carry and use. I have multiples of the exact same knives that I really dig, too.

We knife knuts are lucky to have a huge variety of blades available to us today, so why not check out other brands or models in a size range you already know you like.

I've been collecting for just under two years now, so my collection isn't anything impressive. I buy them, own them, and carry them because I really like them. A box cutter or a $20 Gerber could get done whatever I'd need a knife for :p. Any of my folders could accomplish what I use them for. They're similar in function, but the enjoyment of each one is different. If you buy knives because you only need them as tools, go the practical route, but if you just think they're plain cool, buy what you want! Having different knives of the same function can be nice, since you won't get bored with one, but if you switch you'll know the knife you chose will still be able to perform the same tasks as the other.

You have not been collecting long enough bud - spend enough time here and you will have multiples of your favorites with different steels, scale materials, and more. I try to avoid duplicates as much as I can but I certainly appreciate seeing some collections here, especially of the AFCK, XM-18, PM 2, Sebenza, etc.

I my self have 3 of the same knife! How did i justify it? Different anodizing job. It never hurts to have back ups of the same knife if you really like it.

Ya i have a lot of knives that are similar and i also buy knives just to fondle in my opinion thats what a collection is lol. In particular i have 2 benchmade griptilian 1 just the standard and the others a special edition with g-10 that I couldn't get around using so i got the standard one that i edc frequently i also have 20+ kershaw because I love the company.

I buy plenty of knives in the same style...hell, sometimes I buy more than one of the SAME knife, if they feature different colors. I have 2 Kershaw Leeks(Blue & Black "Smoke", Teal, and am looking at the new composite blade blackwash version), 2 Spyderco Manix 2's(Dark Blue S110V and Translucent Blue BD-1), 2 Spyderco Tenacious(Sprint Run Green and Sprint Run Blue)...

Oh yeah, I forgot a bunch of other duplicates/similars I have:

3 Vic Midnight Minichamps (2 translucent red, 1 Alox). I lost my original plain red version and bought the 2 translucents as replacements.
2 Midnight Managers
3 Vic Farmers - red silver and blue (plus a custom Farmer with scissors and low ride pocket clip)
3 Vic Soldiers - 2 black and 1 red
2 Vic Cadets - silver
2 Vic Huntsmans - 1 stayglow and 1 red
4 Vic Alox Classics (blue, green and 2 black)
2 BM Mini Griptilians (one is a Ritter Mini Grip). Sold my 3rd one, a black blade 1/2 serrated mini.
2 Spyderco Ladybugs (1 1st gen, 1 current gen, and a similar Jester)
2 Spyderco Delicas (1 1st gen full serrated, 1 plain edge current gen, and 1 Salt)
3 Spyderco Dragonflies - 1 1st gen, 1 current gen, 1 G10/VG10
2 Spyderco Caly 3 (G10/VG10) and a Caly 3.5
1 RAT Cutlery Izula and 1 ESEE Izula II (both with TKC G10 scales)

I think that's about it.

I have a few knives that have similar features, but they also have enough differences for me to justify.

I think the Skyline and Knockout are different enough if that's what you're going for.
The Skyline is all around smaller with a liner lock and g10 handles. Not to mention manual. Also has a non deep carry clip. Not a bad clip but it is placed kind of poorly IMO.
Knockout is bigger and a bit heavier. Sub frame lock with aluminum handles. Speedsafe assist. (I prefer manual but my Knockout has the smoothest and easiest to manipulate assist I have used.) And it has a deep carry clip.
Plus their blade shapes are fairly different.
You can't go wrong with either. I am sure the Cryo is a fine knife, just doesn't peak my interest.
