Buying a similar knife to what you already own

Do any of you guys buy knives that are similar in style/use to ones you already own?
Do you guys catch and release some knives?
Do you buy any for no other reason than to fondle them?

Yes, I buy knives that are similar to ones I own hoping that perhaps I would like this one more. I have not played the catch & release game with knives. I usually don't intend to just fondle a knife, but sometimes that is the way it works out.

Similar? lol I've bought the same knife in multiple variations.
It you like it why not?

If you want strictly variety then do just that.

I own all the knives mentioned except for the Cryo G10--my Cryo is just the standard issue model. I actually don't see that these knives are that much alike. The Cryo is really a small knife, Hinderer design with standard frame lock, the Skyline is a small liner lock with a thin blade and thin handle and the Knockout is a medium sized frame lock knife with an aluminum handle and steel inserted lock bar. Furthermore, the Cryo and Knockout have Speed Safe (a feature I really have come to detest but manage to tolerate in otherwise well designed knives) while the Skyline is a standard flip/thumbstud opener.

If you need justification in buying all three, you can cite me.

I think this all depends on your approach to knives:

1. Knives As Tools

If your interest in knives is primarily as how you use them as tools, then it makes sense to have a range of knives for different purposes instead of multiple similar knives. You might occasionally buy a similar knife of a higher quality to see if it would work better for you but some people have trouble justifying spending $150-$200+ on a knife that doesn't cut any better than a $15 Opinel or Mora. :)

If your love of knives is that you love to research, try, buy and have dozens around, maybe you are a collector.

2. The Knife Collector

While they still often use knives as tools, the collector enjoys the knife "hunt." They may have knives from many makers in similar categories, "art" and commemorative knives and enjoy showing their knives to others and creating displays of them.

There is no right or wrong to it - it is just deciding which way your passion is on this.
