buying a straight razor

You DO NOT WANT Micarta for the handle material. The cloth, linen or paper used in Micarta laminate absorbs and retains water. It would be like sandwiching a (thin) carbon blade between 2 wet towels.

Just an FYI, the resins that are used to create micarta saturate the fibers pretty much completely (forced under high pressure), and cure to a finished product that is nearly impervious to water. It provides better moisture resistance than pretty much any natural material, and compares well with most synthetics.

Stick with bone, wood or plastic/resin for handle material.

Micarta is much more moisture resistant than bone or wood, and being made with resins as one of it's two main ingredients, falls into the same category as "plastic/resin".

You're absolutely right. Micarta, particularly when it's polished, doesn't absorb water. If you leave it rough, it may absorb just a bit on the surface, but it won't penetrate, and will dry within a few minutes.

I have collected razors for years, trading for them from barbers and beauticians for whom I used to sharpen scissors. I am retired now, but occasionally will still shave with one of my razors.

The best razors for edge holding, of all that I have, are made in Germany. Some have really hard edges which will chip easily, but they shave a long time before requiring honing.

Be careful with your razors. If you drop them on something hard, there is a very real possiblilty that you will pick up more than one piece. My favorite razor was made in California a very long time ago. Dropped it one day and broke the end of the edge. No repair will be satisfactory. Good thing I have many more.

Hey, tedd.

Still using the Red Imps you gave me years ago. I like the newer one that was made in Germany better than the older, that was made by Case.

Saw an interesting one in the used display at the cutlery shop the other day. It was flat ground on one side, and hollow on the other. Old/nearly unused, I'm tempted just to see what it's like, but I'm not sure how I'd sharpen the flat side. Interesting old thing.

That's not really a shaving razor. That's a microscopic section cutter, used in lab work to prepare samples for viewing under the microscope. Unless, of course, it's a Japanese razor. That's apparently how they make theirs.

EBay....EBay.....EBay....!

Man, CRAP. :grumpy: Okay, I am trying EBay, and every time I bid on a nice blade (I have done this five times already, and looking for the "right" blade usually takes a day to look at and decide on among all the 100's of blades), once I bid it gets bumped up to well over $100 smackeroo's

This is testing my patience, especially since I am a total NOOB. At least it forces me to go back and keep reading. I always learn a little here and there since I really do want to start shaving with a straight razor SOON. :D

Can I suggest another option? Over at StraightRazorPlace.com, there is a BST that quite frequently lists razors in shave ready condition at very good pricing.

The reason I suggest SRP instead of going after something on eBay is two fold. On eBay, you're quite likely to 1) get something that is not shave ready (and unless you have at least an 8K hone and possibly more, you may not be able to get it shave ready) or 2) get something that cannot be made shave ready (Zeepk, Kreigars, etc.)
