Where do people usually buy knives?
Amazon?
Knifecenter?
Local hardware store?
Directly from the dealer?

Well sometimes you don't have the luxury of such and have to resort to eBay.
Now I've found 2 sellers on eBay, both of which with VERY similar names , both selling the same product with a different price and both of them located at Long Quan , China and both of them with the same description layout......

Personally i find it to be a bit suspicious , but I don't have too much experience with eBay so... what do you guys think?

Haven't ordered any from these sellers or China, but I now buy more NIB knives from eBay than I do even from another site named after a famous river, and I buy a lot of knives there too, with shipping being so good. Never had a problem with any eBay knife purchases (although again, mine has all come from just different parts of my own country, haven't ordered overseas yet). I love a good eBay find.

If the delivery sections says its coming from China, avoid it.

You can filter your ebay search results to include only USA auctions, works great.

Although if you don't already know... most real, good, Katanas are going to be around $3000-$4000 USD minimum. This is just my experience back when I was much more interested in swords. Things could have changed in recent years, but probably not so much that any "decent" katana would be that price. It'd be good for a fun display piece though maybe, if that is your thing.

Your overthinking it, it's ebay. Names while simmilar are still different and look at the feedback score that will help out a bit. Both of them are quite high, if it were 2 people with feedback scores which were quite poor or quite low it be something very suspicious.

The bigger thing about ebay you need to worry about is if what your buying is legit, there are a lot of very convincing fakes out there. It's why a lot of us will go to authorized dealers. A good list to start with of trustworthy people to start with I would say is the paid dealer list that is here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1089879-Paid-Dealer-Members-List and please don't link to active ebay links it's considered deal spotting and is against the rules. You can only list links from paid dealers on that list. Or pages that link to auctions that are already done and over.

For me I buy knives from reputable websites that specialize in knives, or occasionally that big warehouse like website you listed that your not suppose to but they have been known to carry fakes occasionally so I avoid it when I can. Or I buy local. I try to avoid auction sites at all costs, too many fakes.

I have bought off ebay long ago when they were more trust worthy. Seen too many bad experiences from friends and family.

I usually go amazon or bladehq.

Ah well in the best situation , I most certainly buy from a certified seller AND if I have $4000 spare I WOULD buy an authentic katana with a certificate, but I don't , I only have a few hundred dollars to spare so that puts me in the domain of Chinese made blades.
Even tho they are made by Chinese manufacturers , its not rare for them to copy each other ...
The thing about knifemaker and swordsmith is that they never have a decent website ,if they even have one. All the manufacturing process is so underground the consumers have nowhere to go to confirm the authenticity of the stuff they've just bought :(

I would stick with purchases in the US only. Check feedback and make sure that all the feedback isn't from one buyer. Ebay now offers buyer protection, so if you get something that is even slightly different from the description, eBay will get your money back and you can return the item. I don't know how that works if a seller is out of the country though. Just remember though... that old saying holds true. You get what you pay for.

Honestly if I was inclined to buy a sword it would be a cheap one anyway. I personally wouldn't have any interest in the expensive authentic stuff unless I wanted to use the expensive authentic stuff... and while I can see myself using a machete for various tasks, a sword not so much, so if I wanted one at all, it'd be cheap and not intended for use. But that's just me.

Or you could just buy a sword from Cold Steel. I am not into swords and I don't know the price points on them, but I can't imagine Cold Steel selling them for thousands. And if you decide to use them, I would think that they should hold up okay.

I assumed authentic katanas are nearly priceless?

I wish popular sites would also list where knife or item is being sent from, as I'd pick closer places and not from across country.

This thread does not belong in General Knife Discussion with so much of it devoted to sources rather than the knives / swords themselves. Discuss deals and dealers in FEEDBACK, where I am going to move this and close it.

Deal spotting:

You are not allowed to direct sales to a source which is not a paid Bladeforums dealer. eBay is not on the list, nor is Amazon, nor are the Big Box Stores.
Current list is at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...aler-Members-********?p=12633453#post12633453

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/f...sts#faq_faq_infractions_auction_deal_spotting

This is a variation of the "no spam" rules that we have. We know you found a great deal on a Ninja Death Tool 3000 - we don't care. If that dealer wants to advertise on BladeForums.com, encourage them to purchase a Dealer membership here instead of giving them free advertising.

You can get an infraction for deal spotting or it can be issued as a warning. The infraction gets you 10 points towards your total. It expires in 12 months.
