Buying Diamond Earrings for my wife...

I'm just presenting an alternative option. My wife thought the most Romantic thing that I've ever done was liquidate my 401k so that we could maintain our lifestyle and keep our house so that she could go back and get her MBA in Accounting. So in that sense I'm extremely pragmatic about things. ☺

Thanks for all the replys guys! I'm definitely sticking to genuine diamonds here. I guess I just don't know how noticeable an I1 clarity diamond would be if that's the only Ideal Cut diamond in my budget. Is the Ideal Cut that much more important than clarity?

Hey macchina the cut trumps all other factors. The inclusions in an earring piece shouldn't matter especially if your wife has long hair. If the inclusion isn't on the table (the top of the diamond) it won't matter as it will be hidden by stuff like the prongs. The goal is to get a diamond at the closest ratios to that ideal cut which is what creates the elements that causes light to refract, bounce around and give you that brilliance that people like in diamonds.

If you get it online and it's certified the certificate should be available online for you to see where the inclusion is in the diamond.

Think about what you're commemorating. Don't skimp. Buy the best you can afford, but of course buy smart. Put your eyes on what you're buying in person. Definitely try to haggle with them some.

I don't buy a lot of jewelry, but for my last big purchase I went to probably the most popular dedicated diamond retailer in my area where you're offered wine and champagne, and there's more plastic surgery in there than an army of Bruce Jenner clones. In short, I was disgusted how I was treated. A girl showed me a diamond that was clearly yellowish and tried to say it was "the lighting". Yeah, all those bright white lights in there made it yellow, and that one small stone was expensive as hell.

I ended up buying from Jared's where I got a fantastic quality piece (I'd done my research) for much less than what I would've paid at Diamonds Direct, and the sales dude was super helpful and chill and told me to wait until a certain date to purchase when a sale would be happening and saved me a ton of money. They seem to have a lot of sales because I still get crap in the mail from them. All the Jared's may not be like that, but I'll go back to mine next time. YMMV

And when you buy at retail chains spend no more than 55% of the regular retail price. Shoot for 45%. There's a reason so many of those chains so often have 45% off sales.

Buy in person. Never really looked at diamonds at Sams Club, but that was an interesting suggestion made earlier.
