Buying doubles of your favorite knives

At one point I had these plus a NIB brown model. Now I'm down to just the Bladeforums Brown. One of a model is all I really need personally.

I bought a double of my Kershaw Shallot just encase it gets discontinued because its one of my favorites and its not super expensive  I also have 2 Kershaw Skylines but they are to different versions

There's no justifying buying doubles, but I do it anyway. I've got more knives than I can use in 10 lifetimes. Can I honestly convince myself that I need 5 sebenza 25's, not at all. I am a collector and a user and that is the best I can come up with to say why I have more than one make of knife. Besides, from time to time a deal comes up and it is easier to let go of an extra knife

I have a few Kershaw chills. RJ Martin design. I like them, perfect ergos for me, inexpensive if I lose one. Less than 1/4" thick, skeletonized liners, 1.8oz, 3" flipper, fast. If someone made a higher end model (better material, but still light and thin) I'd buy a few, and probably never see you guys again. Who am I kidding.................

Love my Micarta Bullnose. Just about to pull the trigger on a canvas one.

For self defense there is a clear justification.
You can specialize in one particular blade. If so, you would train deployment, change grips, throwing it, etc.
it makes sense to buy 10 of them, not two, and practice until destruction with them. Stab wood, stab tires, throw it to the ground pretending to stab a foot or shin, throwing to targets, take it out as quick as you can from your sheath until you break or damage the sheath and or the knife, and so.

If you train regularly, you can have a knife to carry and an knife to train, and spares to replace the ones you train with.

But only in a truly hqrd self defense, martial arts or tactical training regime.

If you're buying a duplicate instead of buying something else, I'd say that's a bad decision. A new knife will probably give you more pleasure. But if you can have a duplicate of a favorite and a new knife...why not. ;)

I've bought doubles if I really like it and it is a limited production run of some kind. Or if it is a knife that is being discontinued, and again if I am especially enamored of it.

I used to but I stopped, however I'm not a collector, so the only reason I was buying doubles is in case I lost one, had it stolen, or damaged it. Over the years I've learned that I'm very unlikely to break a knife, but I've lost a couple and had a couple stolen, and I had no problems finding replacements for any of them. I've also learned that after 5-10 years my taste in knives change and while I may still have an emotional connection to an old user a NIB clone doesn't interest me like it did 10 years ago, plus fit/finish/steel on average improve over time. I still love my original 975 that looks like hell, but if I lost it today I wouldn't buy another one, too many other great options now.

These days you can find just about anything if you wait awhile, wait awhile longer and you won't pay a premium for all but the most rare knives. Want a BM975, original emerson commander, CF S90V PM2, original MT socom, LCC, Simonich Cetan (even talonite), Buck Rambo, Timberline specwar, etc. etc. you can still find them all relatively easy, in fact all but one are currently on ebay, but you might pay for it. However, if you invested that $200 wisely 10 years ago, you could easily pay the premium price and have money left over today.

If I was a collector, or taking advantage of the secondary market, I can understand keeping a NIB one in the safe and one to use, or if it was a very limited edition and I pre-ordered an extra at low prices.

I don't necessarily buy doubles. But I will buy a duplicate knife if I really like a specific specimen.

It's good if the knife gets out of production or the price goes up.
Be ready to be called a hoarder.

I say do what you want! I don't see anything wrong with it at all, especially if it is the perfect grail knife! I can promise you I have a few on my list that I want a back up of!

I have 2 safe queens/ back-ups. One is a Spyderco Military CPM M-4, the other is a Military M390. My reasoning is that they are both pretty rare Sprint Runs, one is 500 (M4), one is 1000 (M390). I have a user in each and a "pre-need" back-up. :) They aren't bad investments either. I know they won't go down in value. That's what I tell myself anyway. :)

I can see buying duplicates of a certain knife if its about to be discontinued. Spydercos get discontinued all the time. Wish I had some discontinued models locked away.

I would love to have doubles of all my knives, but I usually end up getting a similar model. Except for my buck 110's never can get enough of those.
