this is a trend i have noticed among a few people in the knife forums and youtube. do you guys buy several of the same knife, and use one hard while having another in the safe spending its life in the box? i am not opposed to the idea but i wanted to know what you guys think. i am sitting on knifeworks.com about to order an s30v military and a m390 benchmade 710 and i am thinking. should i order 2 military's and never need to buy another and wait a few weeks for the 710-1. or order 2 710-1's and no military? or get one of each and if i loose or damage the knife, i just hope i can find the replacement identical model? what do you guys do when you order?

while your in this thread tell me how you like the military's and the 710's especially if you have the m390. ive been wanting a new knife in that steel so i could see how i like it

have a nice day,
bryan

Well I have not used any of the knives you are asking about, but yea, certain knives I have bought two of, it and makes it mentally easier to EDC a knife knowing you own two.

I do it now. Too tired of finding one I really like, then they stop making it a few years later and I have to search long and far to find a replacement (and usually pay a premium). However, I don't do it often, only if I really like the knife in question and it's not a common design.

We order multiples because the act of buying knives distracts us from our inner turmoil and anesthetizes our souls. We then make up stories to justify these purchases (blade steel, ergos, FFG, blah blah blah), but we really know whats going on here. Why else would anyone in their right mind buy multiples of spendy knives that often do not perform any better, and sometimes worse, then their more reasonably priced brethren?

I too have multiples of numerous Spyderco sprint runs and others, so I'm right there with you guys. I'm just acknowledging whats really happening here.

Damn! You're good! :D

I don't do it with every model of knife I have , but once I find an EDC that I really like , I prefer to have 2 , because carrying it every day , every where increases the chance of loosing it . Also because my knives of choise are Busse Combat knives , they only make limited runs of each model and then you have to pay a premium on the secondary market for one later if you need it .

I do it to compensate for my small p_ _ _ _ _*

Dude, you got me there hahaha!

I usually buy duplicates of a certain knife not because I want a specific user and safe queen, but because different versions exist. For example, the Delica exists in many incarnations. I have a blue and purple FFG Delica. Also, I have multiple Kershaw Skylines, eagerly waiting for the 2012 Forums knife

i buy doubles of my beaters which on several occasions have been given away to friends and family. in my experience folks will use a used knife more and still appreciate the gift. give some people new knives and they sit in drawers occasionally taken out to look at and im sure most of us has hear this before "ohhh i keep your knife in a drawer, its too nice to use... i'll just use my $2 gas station knife."

I even have triples and quads of a few. Same goes for sharpening gear.
Wth...I like 'em !! Nice to have them stashed in different kits instead of looking for only the one.

If I'm buying a knife I've never owned I will only buy one. If I really like the knife I might go later and get a duplicate. I've bought knives and had them change to a newer generation or be discontinued. So if I really like something I will buy a backup.
But, if there are several knives you really like, it makes sense to spend the money you might have dropped on a duplicate on that other knife you wanted.
Take my EDC rotation for example, usually it's a Benchmade Mini Grip, Spyderco Delica or similar sized knife. While these are different knives from different companies they, at least for me, fill the same role. No real need to get duplicates unless you just want to. I admit I have with both of these. But there's still something different. Handle color, blade has serrations or no serrations and so on.
If you do this a lot, it can get expensive.

Only multiple buy was for a pair of $2 Schrade Century SAKs, cause it was $2 each. I have re-bought knives after getting rid of one, like going through 2 Guntings and an Escalator, or switching steel like S30V to CPM-D2 paras and 20CP to M390 para 2s, or other limited stuff rarely held onto, but not getting two at once for a back up. I just have never gotten hung up on a design enough to want another waiting for me to switch to instead of having a totally different knife.

I've got the black bladed M390 710 (710DLC-1, I think) and I'm seriously considering getting a 710-1. I just love the design, and want to go ahead and grab another in case something happens to the first. User and a backup, not a user and a queen. I know there will be other knives later, but the 710 is just a classic for me and the chance at it in M390 is something I don't want to pass up.

Regarding the Military vs 710 - I have both in M390 and highly recommend both. Millie is crazy lightweight for its size and a hell of a slicer. 710 has a slightly bulkier feeling to it, but it's still an amazing design. Handle is perhaps a bit less ergonomic but feels slightly more solid - full liners and thicker overall.

I'd get one of both now and then backups as funds allow.

Some people say that "2 is 1" and "1 is none". IOW if you have 1 and lose it or break it, then you have none. For the same reason if you have 2 and lose/break one, then you still have one. This is good for things that you really need to have for survival. I suppose it isn't a bad strategy for EDC stuff too.

After reading about people buying multiple Spyderco sprints I have been thinking about this some. I have been collecting EDC knives for awhile and this has pointed out to me an alternate strategy. I would buy a knife and carry it awhile, then I would buy a new one that I found and start carrying it, then later on another new one, and so on. During this time I had no need to buy multiples because I had plenty to fall back on if need be and I also knew that eventually I would be buying another new EDC. So if tomorrow for instance if I bought a Spyderco Military and decided I really liked it so I bought a spare, but some people think a Military 2 will be coming out in the future and I might prefer to have one of those instead of the unused military that I was keeping as a spare.

But I've also noticed the problem with this strategy and that is that sometimes you find a model that you really like and fits you well, but then it is discontinued and you have a hard time finding a spare or replacement.

So I guess the moral of the story is that if you have a model that you really like it won't hurt too much to buy a spare. If something happens and you decide the spare is now excess you could probably sell it and not lose too much on the deal.

Oh and another thing- for knives that are limited production some people will buy 2 of them when they have the chance, that way they have a spare that they can sell or trade later if they need to. I've missed the past few Spyderco sprint runs but I'm going to be alert and try to get in on the next one. If I managed to buy 2 then I would have a spare that I might be able to trade for one of the past sprints that I missed out on. I and a lot of other people here really look down on people that buy a lot of extra sprints and immediately try to sell them for highly inflated prices so I'm not going to condone that as a reason for buying multiples.

I probably wouldn't buy multiples of a production knife unless it was being discontinued, however I would certainly buy multiples of a sprint knife, especially if it's a model you already know you like, because it will later be both hard to find and cost more, also that way I feel less inclined to use the one, because I know I have a back up instead of babying it because it will be double or triple the cost to replace if I break it or wear it out or whatever.

Same here. I got spare if the EDC that I like, because so often they discontinue the run.

However, what will be next if the original is gone and spare called into EDC? Will not having the spare of the 'spare' be a problem? I'm still pondering this dilemma :)

Bdmicarta has good point: an improved model might come along, making the spare a useless redundant, as the new one might be a better spare.

What I do is use it an if I like it, I'll try getting a spare.
