buying duplicate's or multiples?

I don't buy multiples but that doesn't mean I won't. I plan to buy a 2nd CS Trailmaster someday and there are actually several knives out there I wouldn't mind having double of.

I've only got dups of about 4 knives, the only reason I have those is because I either misplaced the original and bought a replacement then found the misplaced knife.

The other case is if I got a good deal on close outs and bought multiples all of which I gave away except 2 of 'em from each close out.

Mostly this...
We order multiples because the act of buying knives distracts us from our inner turmoil and anesthetizes our souls. We then make up stories to justify these purchases (blade steel, ergos, FFG, blah blah blah), but we really know whats going on here. Why else would anyone in their right mind buy multiples of spendy knives that often do not perform any better, and sometimes worse, then their more reasonably priced brethren?

I bought a 2nd Spyderco Native because I stupidly lost it; recently I was putting my knives together and realizing the Native was missing--WTH, how many times am I going to have to buy this damned thing!? Is this some sort of curse?

Well, I like Spyderco Military and Paramilitary 2 models. I particularly like them in super-steels. I started out buying one and maybe two and then it kind of got away from me. I seem to have an addiction, but am trying to stop.

If you can look through a website and want every other knife you see, I wouldn't buy multiples. If you're to the point where you can look at a thousand knives and probably find something that you don't like about every one of them, and then you find one that doesn't have anything you don't like about it, I might buy more than one of those.

Don't bother with multiple Militarys (barring sprint runs) since that knife will be in production for at least another 50 years (if not 100+). While I don't expect the 710 to have quite the same staying power, I would be surprised if they stopped making those in the next decade.

I subscribe to the "2 is 1, 1 is none" philosophy. A spare or backup is never a bad idea, in my opinion. This applies to flashlights, knives, firearms, tools, etc. If you've found something that really just clicks for you, buy a few more if funds permit.

I do it now. Too tired of finding one I really like, then they stop making it a few years later and I have to search long and far to find a replacement (and usually pay a premium). However, I don't do it often, only if I really like the knife in question and it's not a common design.

-I agree with the above.

One example is the production offerings designed by F. Perrin. After a few years they seem hard to get or they go out of production. I have two street bowies (Spyderco) and two neck bowies, just in case one is used up or got lost.

Hey, I have between fifteen and twenty (haven't got an exact count in a while) variations on the Busse Natural Outlaw Ergo. I use exactly one of them. Sick, I tell 'ya. I'm sick!

Duplicates, multiples, I gots em, or a bad case of dupicateitis, mutiplesplasmosis, or overprepardnessism, whatever it is I typically shoot for five of each to be safe, two is the minimum of anything. Theres a bunch of stuff missing but this pic kinda illustrates what I'm talkin bout when the two is one and one is none philosophy really sinks in.

There are two (2) rat 1's not shown with their box as one is my truck, the other in my dads truck, and there is another Cold Steel American lawman missing from the family pic as is it as the camp.

Never did until a favorite went missing. Have searched all over for a replacement but it hasn't been made for a while and the rare times I have seen one for sale, the price makes me hold off until it is gone. If I find something that is just right, I will buy a "spare", otherwise only one.

depends on the knife for me. if its a fave or discontinued or I want to customize it then yes. I don't have multiples of many but I do have like, 4 JYD's (or jiddies as I like to call em'.

You nailed it, Chris. Too many fine knives have been discontinued over the years for various reasons. Gotta have some backups in the vault. ;)

If I really like it I'll buy a backup/spare much of the time. Of course, most of my knives are 70-80 bucks or less, not sure I'd have spares around of 150$ knives. This isn't the only area I buy spares - I have very fussy feet and if I find a boot or sneaker that fits just right, I'll buy a backup. Since I started paying the extra buck for Redwings, I haven't bought a new pair of boots in three years.
