Buying first folder......

You have put good thought into getting the Ruger and I agree it's a very good looking knife, I say go for it! The Coldsteels are very tough knives and Bucks are great, wouldn't go wrong with either of them too.

If you want a big knife then my vote goes to the Manix2XL. Compared to that Ruger/CRKT it is a much better knife in my opinion. It is affordable, made in the USA and has a much better steel.

^this.
I cannot give this knife enough praise

Why I want the Ruger folder - I like its size, looks, blade and overall Harsey design.
Usage will be: To cut stuff now and then. Eat biltong on Kruger park trips, and eating steaks at my local pub.
<snip>
The blade is also flat ground - which I like. From the comments here it sounds like the steel is not too bad either.

good reasons to want it.
enjoy!

Stick to American knives as a folding partner in crime with your Becker.
I'm partial to Buck Lots of Paul Bos 420 and S30V in this group..

Wasn't me.I just turned 50 though. Maybe I forgot.:D

I am going to pick up the Ruger this morning.... Will post some pics a bit later.

It looks like the Manix 2 XL will be my first Spyderco knife...

Someone somewhere said that buying knives is like falling into a rabbit hole.

You'll like the Harsey design. I have the old Gerber Harsey Air Ranger II and love it. About the same size as you're getting. It will hold up nicely. Because you know how tough your BK-2 is, you will know what you can and can't do with a folder. Have fun!

I picked up the knife yesterday....

Here are some impressions so far:

The pouch looks like an oversized leatherman pouch with the word Ruger printed on it. Horizontal and vertical carry.

The Knife's open profile is very similar to the Sebenza 25. Just a lot bigger.

I expected a more 'chunky' knife, but after playing around with it I feel that the proportions are spot on.

Fit and finish is pretty good:

Blade centering is perfect.
Blade grind is very close to 100% symmetrical - there is a 2mm left/right difference on the intersection between the swedge and primary bevels.
Lock up is at about 55% - damn solid with absolutely no blade play.
The blade action is smooth to me.
I love the flat grind - for a harder use knife this is ideal.

The weight and balance is very nice for the knife's size. The handle is exceptionally solid which is what you would expect from a thick slab of aluminium.

For a fixed blade guy this has been a pretty successful foray into the folding market.

The only problem is the following:

Now I want more folders and to keep the peace I have to spend money equally: knives / wife

Hi Guys...

I have never really had folding knives - preferring the robustness of fixed blades. (This is probably why I have two BK2s)

For the past couple of years I have been mostly using one of my BK2s for edc. It is usually under my SUV's seat or in my bike's topbox.

I have looked at folders but so far nothing really caught my attention until I saw this:

The ruger go-n-heavy made by CRKT.

I really like the design, size and blade profile...

Does anyone have experience with CRKT knives and their 8CR13MOV steel?

How does 8CR13MOV compare to the 1095 used by the Beckers in terms of edgeholding and stain resistance?

I say go for it. I've owned a few CRKT folders. Granted, I bought them years ago and haven't followed CRKT recently. Still, I have at least a couple, and considering price and quality, they've been good values and solid knives.

What country of origin? If not USA that would be a nagative. For me anyway.

Okay, so this one is not really Becker related, but I understood the OP wanted the Becker crowd's opinion. As such, I let it stand for a while...
Moving it to General, where it really belongs, with a three-day expiring direct... The General crowd may have more to add about CRKTs.
