Buying knives you don't intend to use?

I have a problem because I'm obsessed with butterfly knives but they are illegal to carry so that limits my usage. However that doesn't stop me from buying them because I appreciate the design and like owning them even though I never carry them. So far I have the BM42, BM32, and a Spyderco Smallfly with no intention of stopping. I know people say that knives are a tool and should be used so how do you guys feel about dropping $150+ on a tool that will never be used?

Who knows, maybe someday you will move to a state that allows them for carry. Buy it, the knife companies love guys who buy hundreds of their knives.

I don't see any problem here. How many people collect coins/stamps and never spend them or put them on an envelope. I see that as having a problem IMO. :D

Join the crowd.I have a couple hundred of knives and use 3 or 4.
Ditto here, over 300 knives and three are designated "users."

If you have the money, more power to you.
That's the problem. Being a "bargain shopper" I'm always on the lookout for closeouts, discontinued sales specials, and affordable customs. In each of these cases the knives end up being unsuitable for carry since replacements would be difficult/impossible/expensive.

You think unused pocketknives are bad, ask me about the router, table saw, tile saw, reciprocating saw, compound miter saw, grinders, sanders, etc. that fill the shop. They are nice to have, but only get used a couple time each year. ;)

I do it all the time.

Collecting is the biggest waste of money ever... I collected pokemon cards and never did anything with them. Now I want to jump off a cliff. Ok, it's not that bad, but I kinda wish I had the money now.

I'd get a few that I really like and don't plan to use, but I'm not going to actually go "collecting" with knives.

I know, I'm going to get flamed :)

I'm not flamin ya,but knives have proven to be a good investment to me.We had Uncle Sam come knockin' a few years ago for several K i didn't have.I quickly sold a lot of my collection and was able to pay up without going in debt.My wife doesn't give me a hard time about buying knives any more.I don't know what Pokeman cards are,but knives are better.

I know, it's just that my thoughts on "collecting" have changed since then. I sure love to look at and handle knives, but I can't put out the money anymore just because I like them. There are a few more knives I want... And I'm already having a hard time justifying "rotating" EDCs... lol

Anyway, that's just my opinion. If you guys can justify collecting, that's great.

I've been 'collecting' knives since I was 8 years old. Now I know a better term for it, Accumulating. ;)

I'm hooked on SAK's. I have a fairly large collection of them and only carry one or two out of the whole bunch!,,,VWB.

I buy for use, but I don't think there's anything wrong with doing whatever you want with your money.

I'm a collector much more than a user. Most of my knives and swords stay in the safe. I have a few production and custom users but I am someone who finds beauty in the design and workmanship of a knife so I find myself collecting much much more than using. It's difficult for me to use a custom knife that may have cost $300-$1,000 but it hasn't stopped me from buying them to put in the safe.

I intend to use every knife I buy, but it rarely works out like that. I've got a drawer full of Case's that I have every intention of using and do not :)
