Buying my first Busse couple of questions...

Well hello all, apparently these are the best knives made so I will just certainly have to get one. My first question is once I place my order how long will it take to get the knife? Second is which of the blade finishes is most durable?

Thanks
Matt

Probably about a month if you get a current offering, usually at least half a year if it's a custom shop piece. It varies a lot. Some people get them quick, some don't. I can only assume with the holidays coming up and having just finished the NMFSHLE knives, they are less busy... but, nah, they're always busy :)

Not sure what you mean by durable. If you mean protection for the steel, black is probably the most durable. Their black coating is a crinkle coat. It's thick and raised, so theoretically it has more to wear out than the other colors, which are smoother coats. If by durable you mean that it does not dramatically change aesthetically, satin is a good choice--there is no paint to wear out, and INFI is really tough to wear out.

Welcome, good luck, and have fun

I'll vote CF (competition finish). It's basically the raw INFI. You do have to keep it lightly oiled, i use a little vegetable oil. If you plan on being in a corrosive environment a lot, then you probably want a coating.

As far as aesthetics go, i've done some copping on fresh and dead wood with my TGLB, and after a quick wipe down and spray and wipe with oil, you can't tell that it's been out of it's pants.

Keep in mind, the CF isn't uniform like satin, so, if it get's some fine scratches (which i really don't see in mine, honestly), it's less noticeable than on a "pretty" finish... so the question is, do you want it to look like it was "new," or to look like it has a pristine finish ;) CF is rough to begin with.

Since i don't have any satin "user" blades, someone else will have to tell you whether those need the light oiling. Oh, double cut is an option on some knives, it's a double bead blasting, and is supposed to help with corrosion resistance (not that INFI is "prone," but it's not "stainless").

CF is not listed on the site, you have to call or email, and it's usually no extra charge.

I'm not one of the real "experts" here, just a piglet in training, but i know what works for me...

CF pic attached...

Yepp I'm thinking the competition finish is the way to go. I plan on using this knife a decent amount and don't want the finish to wear off. I plan on getting TGLB current offering with no custom touches. I do want to get a nice kydex sheath but I think Busse shows on there website someone that makes them. Thanks guys!

If you go to the Busse Company store there may be some knives ready for immediate delivery. But watch out, Skunk sometimes adds a little extra junk in the package.

Big Matt--new offerings will likely be available soon! Anniversary blades! Might want to hold off on that purchase for one month or so!

LOL. You have been around long enough to know that Jerry teases us with new model names that take forever, or never, to be released.

Don't hold your breath, or your money. Buy what you like when you see it.

BigMat, welcome to the Forum! Take your time and look around. There are only two models for sale on the Busse Combat site, but many, many choices on the resale market.

Normally absolutely. BUT remember the facebook $100 giveaways? Lexi said they expire in March 2013, but there will be a few new releases between now and March that we'll be able to spend the $100 shop credit on. Since they wouldnt release the knives THE DAY that the $100 credit expires (that would just be silly), we're likely looking at a 2-2.5 month wait at most. The Busse crew is sneaky, sure, but they wouldn't lie and make us save the shop credit for nothing. =)

Comp finish is fantastic.

Satin is another favorite (neither are a coating). Since you are dealing with bare steel, it is a durable as the hardened steel.

Yes, quite a bit different. Competition finish is more "raw" and can rust easier than satin, DC, or coated blades.

Listen to RG he's right. One thing I've learned is you never know when new stuff is coming out regardless of what anyone says even BossHog himself.

CF might not be as corrosion resistant as satin, but like i said, no problem with mine with some decent use and reasonable care.

i can't speak for discount offers or other things, since i never get a deal and never win anything, and pretty much have to work for everything i get!

I met Dave Brown and bought a great kydex sheath for my Pork Shank at the recent AZ Crossroads show, he is on these boards regularly, and does great work at great prices. He actually had this zombie sheath signed by Ted Nugent for which i would have given my left... um... well, needless to say, it was cool + cool.

anyway, bare metal = a little more work, but less visible wear. I am not sure if you can get a TGLB (outside of the custom shop), in Satin, just an FYI.

And as far as waiting for specials and new releases... why wait? After the first first one, you probably won't stop until you have 4, 5, 6, whatever. They are addictive.

And the TGLB is an awesome blade! (no, i do not work for, nor profit from, the sale of Busse knives. I just like 'em)

Of most of the ones I've seen I like the TGLB most so I think it's the one I want. I am just not very patient once I decide to get something I want it immediately. I'm an instant gratification whore I guess. But I think it comes from growing up poor. I always told myself "if I'm ever rich I'm gonna buy whatever i want" Well I didn't get rich but I'm blessed enough to have a couple of thousand a month in disposable income so damnit if I want something I want it NOW lol. Again thanks for the advice guys

Well, good things are worth waiting for.

Look at it this way. Steve Jobs, with pretty much all the money in the world, ordered a yacht. Took so long to build, he never saw it. Sad, but true.

That doesnt help i dont want to die before i see my TGLB!

Perhaps get a colour coating and when it has been warn Dow simply strip the knife yourself, it's fun doing this. Like you get a whole new knife.
