Buying my first Busse?

The good 7 inch blades are the Camp Tramp by Swamp Rat .... the Basic 7 IF you can find one ....... the SFNO LE is a good heavier choice ..... personally I like the jump up to a 8 inch NMSFNO if I want something heavier than a Camp Tramp ..... a lighter 8 inch blade is the SAR 8 ..... that might be ideal for you if you don't like "deep" blades .... the Basic 7 is also great for a none too deep blade and would be my choice from all the above.... but RARELY seen on the exchange ....

Personally I think from a realistic stand point, they are just as good... or let me say just slightly below (maybe) but still light years ahead of other companies. They use the same principles of design. I wouldn't put any less faith in a swamp rat or scrap yard knife when used for any practical application. Jerry himself has pointed out pros and cons of all 3 steels depending on the use. Infi is better for some applications whereas SR101 (swamprat) is better for others.

INFI seems to have better corrosion resistance across the board though. The thing with Busse and family knives is that they are designed and made so much better than other knives that between them (busses) the differences and advantages are much smaller. You're splitting hairs. You're not comparing a Busse to a Schrade or a cheap smith and wesson knife.

If a Swamp Rat or Scrap Yard knife peaks your interest, is more readily available or fits your budget better go for it. They are excellent knives. Only the knife snob inside you will eventually force you to get a Busse... just because.

So if there truly is less than a hair of a difference between Busses and Swamprat/ Scrapyard, then wouldnt the swamprats and scrapyards be the superior knives? since they are busse level of quality for significantly lower prices?

And also, i know you said that the difference between Busses and the bussekin is minuscule, but what constitutes that difference? what are the factors that give busse the lead?

A lot of difference between the three is preference, you might like the feel of one brand compared to another, personally, I like Busse's feel the most. It's best balanced and I like the weight.

Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard aren't supperior to Busse (in my opinion), but they are still da*n good knives. But like I said, it's mostly preference. You need to handle all three and see which one you like the most.

SR101 has ~ 90% of the performance of INFI at ~60% of the price. The most significant difference is corrosion resistance, INFI being much better.

SR77 has outstanding shock/abuse resistance, but less edge-holding than the other two Bussekin steels.

Well... no. Knowing the exact differences will come from hanging around here enough and learning.

Exactly... what I was trying to say in a nutshell. You won't purchase a SW or SY and be dissappointed by any means though. You're still getting an M1 Abrams, but with cloth instead of leather seats.

Ah. I get it. well if thats the case then scrapyard seems like a really good deal considering its about the price of any high end sog, benchmade, or ESEE fixed blade, with the quality of a busse (minus the leather seats)
