Buying My First Fixed Blade

"From what I have read, the tips tend to break if you get one that had a bad treatment."

Why are you saying this? It's simply not true. Exactly what is the source for these rumors. The issue of heat treat and Ontario Randall blades has been addressed repeatedly - both Randall and Perrin have been here to comment on this. This is malicious and needs to stop.

I did a quick search for RAT7 and found a similar question about the heat treat at Ontario in another thread. Apparently, the rumors are around--whether they're unfounded or not. And maybe not everyone has read the rebuttals that you have read.

It would be helpful, averageguy, if you could point in the direction (post a link) of posts made by Randall and Perrin about the subject. I don't think anyone is trying to attack the RAT7 line or be "malicious." It's just that there are concerns based on previous posts at BF. If they're unfounded or off-the-mark, then it would be nice to see some info from the makers to the contrary.

See here, for example:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=367947

In that thread, one poster notes that the HT issues at Ontario don't extend to the RAT line of knives and that Ontario is quick to handle any problems that do arise with any of their knives.

Sounds right to me. I still take a look at the RAT Outdoor Forums from time to time, and I think that Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin are stand-up guys and don't think they would be associated with anything except a quality knife.

I still would like to read the BF posts to which you refer by Randall and/or Perrin.

I have nothing against the RAT 7. In fact I sort of regret selling mine but I can only afford to have a couple of knives that I use. I can't really collect all the blades I like. I'd be broke.

Now I did not say that the Rat 7 line has a bad temper and break. Nor did I say that there was a consensus that they do. What I said was that I had "read" about this issue. I don't have enough experience nor time to research so often rely on the opinions I see here on this forum. Many of us rely on this and may be swayed. Good or bad that's how it works for some of us.

The Rat 7 may be the best knife on the planet. I wouldn't dispute it. But there are those who bring up the possibility of getting one that has had a bad heat treatment. Perhaps that is a %100 lie. Then I would rely on those w/ enough experience here to test this or prove it false. Perhaps that has been done already.

Is that where this got started? The thread doesn't suggest to me any consensus that there are problems with these knives.
I never said either. Read carefully please. I just wrote that concerns had been expressed in other threads and linked one example. And I agree. There is no consensus in that thread about heat treat problems. Only an initial inquiry about problems that are refuted.

Thanks for the link. I now remember that thread, actually. Not too much about heat treat on the RAT-7 there, but it shows two things: Cliff Stamp's typical hijacking tactics and the solid manner in which RAT stands behind its knives.

swamp rat  ....i have the howling rat and boy is it tough!!

they also have the best warranty around: garaunteed for life even if you abused it!!

All of us need to be careful what we say. Comments like "I've heard" can easily be translated as "the truth", just like the politicians do it when they want to cast suspicion.
When I want opinions I usually am sure to include "from those who own/have owned one". I still get folks who have never had the product pipe up with what they've "heard".

Back on topic...All those knives mentioned have good reputations and I like 'em all, but I don't need to pay the price for a Swamp Rat, nor do I wish to wait for one. I don't live in the wilderness, but I do camp out every now and then.

Truth be told you might be just as well off with a Ka-Bar USMC

Get the best you can afford

Good point Redhat. Next time I'll include a link to what I refer to so people can see what "I've heard" if it at all adds to the thread. Thanks.

Back on topic: I've never used a knife to the point where it failed. We'll actually I used a bolo to prune a guava tree and pieces began to blow out of the blade. Very sad. Wrong tool for the job I guess. But I look forward to pushing the Swamp Rat Ratweiler as far as I can.

I think what did it for me was that I wanted a heavier blade. The Rat 7 semmed perfectly fine but I wanted a little more heft. Just a preference. I might change my mind later. Who knows.
