Buying my first sword

Thank you so much! I just emailed them to get a bit of information. (they dont mention anything about the blade material. Do you happen to know if it is the same as the waki?)
This might be the one...

I would suggest taking another look at the Hanwei Tinker Bastard sword. Its very plain, but Tinker Pearce actually designed the sword for Hanwei. Its probably better balanced and closer to the actual dimensions of older weapons. Its a user not a wall hanger.

The scrapizashi is made out of SR 77 steel. It is a modified version of S7 shock steel. It is without a doubt the absolute toughest steel on the market. S7 is the steel that is used for the bits on jackhammers and the teeth on bulldozers. I have many knives made out of SR 77 and it is a fantastic steel that holds a great edge and is tough as nails. I hit concrete with one of my knives on accident and it only slightly rolled the edge. No company besides Swamp Rats SR 101 or Busse's INFI can match the toughness and edgeholding of SR 77 for your approximate price point.

Get a scrapizashi, other swords may look cooler but let's face it you can't chop down a tree with most of the fancy katanas and waki's out there. The Scrapozashi is made to be abused and has a lifetime warranty. Can't go wrong with the scrapyard :)

I ordered my scrapizashi last night. Now I'm looking for a sheath and I think I'm getting one from azwelke (who is on the forum)

Rest assured you made a good decision :) I want to pick on up if i cant get some extra cash sometime soon. And Azwelke makes some awesome very affordable kydex.

If you're really interested in the "LOTR" type longswords, then may I recommend you look at a Christian Fletcher/Atrim collab? That said, they're probably going to run around $800-$1500 depending on level of detail and items wanted (type of belt, scabbard, etc).

If you're looking for a budget cutter than I'd suggest either a Kris Cutlery Teutonic or War Sword : http://kriscutlery.com/documents/medieval.html - they're pretty well-made, good heat-treat in general, and can take damage from misaligned cuts and mistakes pretty well considering. Cold Steel are also good beaters though they're overly heavy and not very well-made IMO.

If you're looking for a well-balanced cutter in the similar price range, try the Atrim/Valiant Armoury collabs (the long sword might suit you). The Hanwei/Paul Chen/Tinker Pearce collabs (the long sword, sword of war, and bastard sword are all similar to what you're looking for).

I just bought my first sword a few minutes ago. Got a Swamp Rat Waki off of another forum for $361 shipped. Can't wait for this to show up in the mail.

i have a Waki. i wasn't going to mention it because, at first, it seemed the OP was looking for a European sword. the Waki wasn't my first sword, but it might very well be my last. it is amazing, i can't see how anybody would be let down by it. mine's in the car, right now, as always. i haven't see the Scrapizashi, in person, but would have to assume it's equally awesome

i don't know about the SR77, but SR101 is truly the most amazing steel i've ever owned (atleast with Swamp Rat's heat treat, anyway).

@bobbystoney: what forum? i looked for a good price for the waki and couldnt find it...

also, just got a notice and my sword got shipped today!!!

Don't want to be a party pooper.
I'm also Canadian and I do war of 1812 reenactments.
I'm around swords quite a bit during the summer (Own a British navel boarding cutlass) and from what I gather it is illegal to own a sword in Canada if it is sharpened. I've not met anyone at a reenactment who's sword was sharpened, and I recall overhearing some men speaking with a police officer (Also a reenactor) who made the statement about dull swords.
The grey area is between what's a Knife and what's a Sword. I believe what you've purchased is distinctly a sword by design, and can't make the argument that it's just a long knife.

I think this law was put into place because of all the martial arts stuff. They don't want skilled "Ninjas" walking the streets with sharp swords. and because we're not allowed to arm ourselves in Canada for the purpose of self defense. A sword being strictly a "Weapon" for either offence or defense. and can't be (By design) used for any other purpose. And a sharp one is like owning a hand gun.

I have tried to find some information for you but can't come up with anything.
I'll email the guys in my group and see if I can come up with some more solid info for you

I've already bought my 2nd sword now. Got me a Busse AK-47. looks like that pretty much broke the bank though so I'm done for a while.

P2TM, I'll send you a link with the forum where I got my Waki.

Swords are 100% legal to own in Canada.

The legality problem is when it comes to where you're using it. If you're walking around in a mall with your sword on your back, chances are you will be reported and the police will probably arrest you if you have no reason to be doing so. They're not going to care if you're in your back yard cutting up trees and water bottles with it, or practicing martial arts with it. I understand that some people in the past have had troubles with transporting them on foot to their dojo or whatever for practice cutting, and have had some explaining to do when a police officer sees them. I guess a reenactor spotted by a cop would probably be questioned on why he's carrying around a cutlass, but for reenactment purposes an unsharpened blade would be a lot safer and wouldn't be considered a weapon anyway.

General rule of thumb here is you can't hang a sword on your belt if you're going out to pick up groceries.

Just a heads up, too, Canada post almost always makes me pay duty fees on the swords I buy overseas, so that means they inspect the items and deem them legal for me to own here. If Canada Post says it's Ok, it must be legal, because I've heard of them confiscating things that are 100% legal. ;)

I got my sword today!!! Took a while to get it shipped, but then it took only a couple days to get here from then. Had to pay $40 to customs though... :(

That's less than I pay for brokerage on steel for a sword! How was it shipped?

Have you cut anything with it yet?

I think they sent it usps. Unfortunately I havent had a chance to. Had work right after I got it and all of outside is covered in snow anyways... soon though.
Now I'm just waiting for my sheath to arrive in the mail....

I'm like a little kid at Christmas waiting for my swords to get here.

Make sure to post pics of the sword and sheath.

Can anyone compare the Swamp Rat Waki and the Scrapazashi ? They look similar...
I will be ordering one, I'm just not sure which one yet.

Thanks.
