Hi, I am buying a knife posted on the exchange and so far have received emails from two different addresses asking for payment. I am concerned that at least one is a scam. I don’t see a way to send a DM and the seller has not yet responded in the thread itself. How can I be sure an email is from the seller?

One email says I can use Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal. The other specifies PayPal friends and family. The two addresses are different and are not variations on the name of the seller on the exchange.

Read any of the various threads over in the Feedback subforum and you’ll see that this is likely the same scam that has been prevalent with unsuspecting members. I strongly recommend spending the $10 to get a basic membership so you can communicate privately (and directly) with the seller.

You are being scammed. Wait to here from the seller in the thread to confirm if he has even sent a email and to identify it in some way. You need a paid membership to PM -start at$10 and well worth it

I just sent you a DM.

Thanks, all, looks as though a paid membership is well worth it.

Welcome, by the way.....You are one of the Smart ones, for asking about this....Great Question....

Never give those emailing F's a dime!!!
-Good Luck with the sale.

I’m glad my alarm bell went off. Creepy that people are trolling the forums looking for sales but I guess it’s easy to do. It steals from both me and the maker.

I got the basic membership and DM’d the maker asking he DM me to give correct payment info. Boru13 I will be in touch before I pay anything.

Hi. The seller responded in the thread that the dagger has been sold. The email he left in the thread is not remotely like the address of either person asking for payment, so it seems likely there were multiple scammers on this one.

Lesson learned! Thanks everyone for their help and feedback.

Also look at the light Blue Banner at the top of each page, it reads,
  • The rules for The Exchange can be found here. Please read and follow them. Stop using Paypal Friends & Family and follow our best practices to prevent getting ripped off or having a bad deal.

Yeah the friends and family PayPal was a warning sign, though the big thing was the email addresses of the presumed scammers having no resemblance to the seller’s name.

I’m giving a little side-eye that mine was the first/only post saying “I’ll take it” and then I hear it was already sold, nor did he seem interested that people were trying to rip us both off, but whatever. My instincts were correct. From now on I will use DM’s only. And maybe take my email off my profile, or hide it if possible.

Yes, Absolutely take your email down!!!! If you have difficulty as a mod.

Everyone Should search their names and emails here on the search function...and delete those posts

Problem is I think my email is my ID, or at least there’s a warning that if I change it I may need to log in again.

Does BF store email for login purposes separate from where someone can see it on my profile?
