I recently purchased a nice block of amboyna burl. I looked at many places. Not eBay or generic photo places. Most of the pieces were really nice. Most were priced similarly. There was a place that wanted 3 times as much as the others. I did not see any real difference in those pieces . The block I bought is very nice. Is there really any difference in the real expensive ones vers the ones that cost around $40. Ty BH

The stabilization method can be quite different. The "homebrew" methods are gonna let you down to different degrees depending on wood species.

I buy all mine from reputable guys like Alpha Knife Supply and Burlsource. Saving a few bucks on a block can really prove to be a costly mistake.

I purchased mine at Knifegun supply it is really nice. Also USA supply seems reasonable. What do you think of those places.

K&G is very reputable. I am not sure who does the stabilizing for USAKM but I'd suspect it's quality.

So is it safe to say, that there really isXznt much of a difference between a very nice piece of burl from knife gun supply , or the like, for $30-$40 vers a piece of burl that is very expensive when compared . I want to get quality wood. I feel I need to purchase one of the pricey to compare . I would assume they get business but if there is really not much of a difference then why. Would it be better to purchase a bigger piece , cut it up, and send it to knife and gun supply? Does anyone know of a good amboyna burl supplier who sells bowl blanks for a reasonable price?
want to purchase wood I can be confident in.Ty Ben

The price difference comes from the appearance of the wood and the lack of inclusions. It is also based on the size. Make sure that the sizes are similar if one is more highly priced. One person gets my burl business and that is Mark from Burlsource.
