Just a suggestion? If we're talking BIG ticket money here, several hundred bux I guess, it might be an interesting idea to "broker" the deal with some 3rd party known to both, trusted by both. He takes in both money order/whatever (to actual seller) and the knife, inspects, passes everything along if it all looks good. If there's *any* glitches either way, he EMails both parties and it gets sorted out.
This would increase shipping costs, and the "broker" should get a minimum $20 or so fee, maybe more. I wonder if James Mattis, or mebbe Spark would be interested in doing something like that? Either would do fine, there's other people here I'd trust too, like Walter Welch...I canNOT due to insecure mail delivery.
Come to think, due to laws that's pretty close to how FFLs help handle gun deals. You could maybe use a local FFL at a gun shop with a good rep to pull the same basic idea? Only glitch there is they couldn't do it for autos unless you were a qualified buyer. The legalities of "brokering" autos even for a mostly "private" broker could be hairy.
Another idea (originally pioneered by Earl and knifeforums) is for the forum to have "registered sellers" with all personal contact info banked by the forum, mostly eliminating the "fly by night" syndrome. That's how the "casino" works on deals upwards of $500.
I haven't personally done a private party deal. I've had zero problems with dealers, custom makers or other craftsmen.
