Take Erics advice Bravado and leave that baby alone
If you want a different handle call the shop and ask them what they could do about it. Maybe they can make one with slabs or a regular 550 wrap, again you're better off checking in with them.
Without knowing whether or not there are holes under the wrap it's hard to say if they could fit Micarta to it or not(if you're refering to one you already have). I would expect that once it's tempered any hole drilling would be out of the question.

This is just me being nosy and is not meant as sarcasm or anything else. What are you looking for in removing the cord wrap? I've found it to be extremely durable, comfortable and it doesn't cut into my hand like many of the other cord wraps I've handled.
Also I'm not sure what it can be replaced with without making a special request of the shop(or custom shop) as I don't know what is under it. Let us know what you decide to do, this is an interesting idea.
