Buzzsaw Blade annealing

I know... I know... Everyone and there brother has a grudge against using unknown steels. And I understand why and how difficult it is and that what I got may be a complete crap shoot. But, here we go. Last weekend at a swap meet I bought 2 buzz saw blades for $15. One is 19inches across and when cleaned up comes in at .090 and the other is 24.5 inches and comes in at .130. I started on the smaller one and I have tried several times to anneal it and I can't get it to anneal. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do here? I made a small stick tang out of it and after i heat treated it i had .050 on my edge and started beating on a piece of rebar to see if it would roll, chip, or break and it just dented the rebar in. It sparks very well. My heat treat regime, I got it slightly past nonmagnetic and let it soak for 3 minutes and quenched in warm oil. I need to anneal these bigger pieces to drill pin holes in, its wearing out my crumby little drill press. I hope someone can help me and I know everyone will suggest that this entire conversation could have been avoided if i had used known steel... Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

It's good steel, very similar to 1075-1084. No need to anneal, just normalize... Heat to a red color and let air cool.

hey don, thank you for the reply. I have tried this and I still cant drill it.

I forgot to mention this is the old ones with fixed teeth, not the ones with replaceable teeth.

You may be heating it too hot, or it's cooling too fast? Dull bits? I've used a lot of old saw blades & one normalizing heat, they always drilled fine?

The old pro hit the nail on the head. I was drillin holes before the steel was even cool. Thank you very much Don. That saw blade steels seems to be some hard stuff. I appreciate it very much.
