BWM LE initial impressions

Like many others my BWM LE came in today and here are my initial impressions.

Fit and finish are fantastic. The satin is beautifully done with a semi nuclear meltdown treatment on the edges like the BOSS Street. The handles are nicely finished and almost have a shine to them. The edge is a very nice convex which has been blended into the grind very nicely, as close to a zero convex edge as you can get on a flat saber grind.

The balance is right at the front of the choil where the edge begins. In hand it feels much more capable of chopping than I expected. Compared to the CG FBM in the pic I think the BWM LE will hold it's own in a chop off. I initially thought this would be similar to the Swamp Rat M9 LE but they are not similar in feel at all. The best way I can describe it is the M9 feel like a fighter and the BMW LE feels like a chopper.:)

The handles are basically a magnum handle with swells in all the right places and I love that it is just a little bit bigger than the fusion handle where your fingers curl under. The grooves on the handle also give it a very nice grip while still giving the illusion of being hand shaped.

I don't have a CG version and therefor cannot make that comparison but from what I have read, I would think this LE version would be a more capable chopper than the CG. We'll let the physicists on the forum debate that theory.

Here is a comparison pic. I will try and get out to test the BWM LE but that won't happen for a while so the performance is based solely on initial feel.

Over all I am very pleased with this knife and recommend that if you are on the fence of buying one, do it, you won't regret it.

Thanks oeser, that's what I wanted to hear!!! Now back to stalking the mailman... so is this what it feels like to be Jaxx?

:p J/K brother. I am totally STOKED for this knife!!!

Hmmm... I sure hope mine don't have those errant tick marks in the satin finish!
Certainly not what I would expect for a $600 knife, and an LE to boot! :(

Now that I've got that off my chest, CONGRATS!
Thanks for the quick review.

Mine have not arrived yet, but I'm really guessing that this one will be fairly close to the original SHBMs as far as weight, balance, & feel.

I'm a little surprised that you placed it above the CG FBM in chopping capability though?

And is the top FBM a .270" thick variation?
Edit to add: Scratch that... see that it's an NMFBM. :)

Just got my CG BWM and it is beastly! :D Much more substantial than I imagined. It is actually longer and 1oz heavier than my Rat Daddy. Wow. :)

Oeser, 'grats on the arrival of your BWM LE.

Are those the actual metal or just some particles that the flash picked up? I doubt they'd ship an LE satin finish blade like that, so I'm thinking it's probably packing material etc.

I think it is an optical illusion with the way the light hit the finish and I have not wiped all of the stuff off the blade yet. This picture is perhaps a little better demonstration of the finish.

The finish really is fantastic, just a bad pic.:o

Gorgeous!

I can barely take pictures, let alone a video review.

I will leave that to you, video master.:D:cool:

Send me your LE and CGFBM (Mines is a Safe queen now post SPA) and I will be more than happy to break it in for you. :D

I will send them back when I am done. :D

Much better. :)

I've seen those tick before though... comes from a loose strand w/ grit on it at the edge of the finishing belt.
If you hold it at the right angle to the light, are they still there?

Anyway... glad you are happy with her! :D

Still curious about why you placed the BWM LE over the FBM CG for chopping ability though.

I would think the FBM CG still has the advantage. Can't wait to see your comparo.

Wow, that is good lookin'!!! Thanxx for the preview of what's to come this way soon!! :D:thumbup: #10...good number. :)

Yep, if you hold it at the right angle you can sort of see them kind of blended into the rest of the finish. Should I be concerned?

The reason I placed it just above the CG FBM (again this is all speculation at this point) is because they feel almost the same weight wise, but the Bushwacker doesn't have the CBT and has a nice convex edge. I think those factors will give it an ever-so-slight edge on the CG FBM or at least they will be evenly matched.

Ankerson, my Mudsnake is a safe queen too, but maybe I will get a user just to see how they compare.

Yeah I just can't bring myself to use mine since I got it back from the SPA, I used the heck out of it before it went though. :D

I bought a couple of BWM LE's, one to keep and one to beat, and I am trying to decide if I want a CG FBM as a user too.

The more I mess around with the two the more I notice their subtle differences. The Bushwacker seems more capable of doing menial tasks as well since it is slightly narrower than the FBM. Both are really amazing.

If I really want to chop down a forest I will grab my NMFBM.

If you are going to use her, no worries.
If she's to be a safe queen... it would bother me.
But really, for $600 and being an LE, I don't think it's acceptable. :o
I have a few that should have had better QC... I might send them back for
cleanup, but that's a lot of wasted $$$ on shipping & insurance for what
should have been done right the first time. Just my 2 cents.

BWM LE & CG FBM feeling the same weight wise... It's funny what the
balance of a blade can do to its feel of weight in hand. My FBM Recurve Proto
feels the same weight as the CG FBM... But I doubt that's true considering
.320" thick versus .250" thick, even with the metal removed from the
agressive clip point, straight spine, and recurve on the BM Proto. The
balance point is about 1"+ further back towards the handle on the Proto BM
compared to the CG FBM.
