Hello has anyone heard any rumors regarding our favorite company. I have had some disturbing emails regarding this subject. If anyone has any information regarding these reports please let us know. I fear that our american preoccupation with supporting those who hate us may have finally added another American institution to its list. Lets hope reports are false. I do not wish to bear false information and so far I have only the sworn reports of a couple of people who I have always trusted so I am sticking my neck out with this posting I truly hope I have been given false information.

Please while checking any news sources if you hear any information regarding Schrade please post so that we may confirm or dispell any rumors. Best to you all and my greatest pleasure would be that I have been hoaxed. LT

The following is an example of what I have been receiving I hope it is just some mistake . (EXAMPLE ) Rich, i read the papers on line, some times they throw in a very current
event, as they did today. It did close this morning 7-29-04. I also saw it on
channel 6 news this evening, they interviewed the president of schrade and a
few employees. Main reasons were, business losses since 911, and foreign
imports. If i hear anymore i'll keep you posted. Take care, Bob ( copy of email received LT)

Don't calm down, be MAD, you have every right to be. But don't be surprised im not, a zillion automatics coming into the country not a damn thing done but you can't display a hundred year old artifact that your grandfather made in this country legally. Competition made this country and the battle for tariffs ect in the knife business are as old as the industry in this country. Cutlers left europe because of the inhuman standards treatments and wages you who read this forum have heard me say ( and they are not my words ) those that forget history are destined to relive its mistakes ). Welcome aboard the only reason that this happened is because legal and illegal imports including automatics are flooding the market. ( LAWS REGARDING THEM ARE NOT BEING ENFORCED) So we sit complacent. We can't compete in automatics to many laws that we adhere to, they don't So we sit complacent. We can't afford to make pearl handles due to dangerous carcinagens ( OSHA standards) you know, no problem for chinese communist prisoners many in jail for expouncing what we believe ( democracy) So we sit complacent. Tell some guy now on welfare that OSHA is watching out for him and he will never get cancer from pearl dust carcinagins but he might lose his family or home or maybe start drinking more than he should yea tell him that he is much better off now. Tell the people who Schrade used to hire who were special ( minor handicaps ) but could handle repetition in factory jobs and were given pride by being functional and useful to themselves and there familys, that they can sit back now an vegatate. So we sit complacent. Many times the question of what type of steel was preferred was brought up regarding products well now if you have a question send it to them commy bastards that our fathers died protecting us from and whose warnings and history WE ignored. See if they send you a new knife if yours is faulty. Schrades closing is not the problem of the people who are now unemployed or those that made the decisions it is our problem americas problem. Your problem my problem but really the problem of those who come after us. So crank up that Toyota take out that set of chinese pliers. Then lets all wave at our friends in these countrys send them some aid, take a little Prozac to calm down after all when the time comes they will help us. NO don't calm down and don't be complacent the only thing left is that we don't go quiet into the night. To those generations of Americans who worked for Schrade and built this country and then went to war and protected this country please accept at least my apology for letting you down. Schrade has always been besides everything else a good neighbor helping others to help themselves to say that they will be missed is not enough more like a black hole tears the very fabric of space that is the type of rent losing a company like Schrade creates. Soon the beast of the night will skulk in to pick the bones of the once great eagle. machines tools whatever will fall to the vultures . SO WE SIT COMPLACENT. Goodbye you noble ideal. Yes I to am mad and care not one iota who knows or what language the speak. I have only one statment that I feel says it all AMERICA THE HELL WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD . RICHARD V LANGSTON LT RET NYS DEPT OF CORRECTION. ( LT.)

This SUCKS! I only hope that somehow out of the ashes something new will rise. More when I get my thoughts straight.

Same Old $hit.
Tex, believe me, I never wanted to post it.
LT. Well said.
That's exactly how I felt when my fathers job was outsourced to Mexico about 8 years ago. He worked for Philips Components, Philips you know being a large electronics manufacturer. The branch he worked at made semiconductors (little pieces of ceramic metal), the company was doing fine, they had a die-hard niche market. They consistently turned a profit. Then the Mother company out of Holland came in and decided that they could make MORE money by closing operations and moving the facility to Mexico.

The things that really made schrade special, not only for it's quality, but as a place was the family feeling to it. The company did a whole hell of alot more than just employ people. We worked FOR the community, that company routinely offered generous donations to the local schools, atheletic teams, hospitals, scholarships, etc. We did all this because a large percentage of our staff (My self included) had multiple family members working there as well.

I can say with a clear conscience and honesty say that we tried EVERYTHING to keep afloat. At the end of the day it was a bad economic situation, combined with a few other problems that did it to us.

I understand, as do you apparently, that this country is ill, we have grown so given to convienience and lowest-priced-anything, that we forget the obvious fact that a if noone buys american made goods, guess what folks, no more american jobs! It goes even deeper than that though. Everyone celebrates the awesome power of automation and the use of robots. They allow for the difficult/risky jobs to be handled by a machine freeing up thier human counterparts. That's great, but now the human is screwed. (BTW Schrade bought and owned ONE robot. Decided not to pursue that avenue any further after they were somewhat dissatisfied with the outcome.

I know that I personally buy items that I know have been made by actual craftsmen whenever I can. My knives are Schrade, My axes are Gransfors Brus (swedish company, but they actually hand forge their products and the smithies initial every piece they make!) I drive a pontiac, I own a cannondale bicycle. I buy HUMAN. and you know what, it does cost more, but ultimately, it costs us all alot less.

Will this country wake up from its retarded stupor? Who knows. But my rant for now, has come to an end.

I don't know what to say. This is really sad news and it F*@$*+G sucks.

I started to write a long note but its already been said by those whom got here earlier than me and better. This sucks.
We have been reading the writing on the wall for over a year but its still a shocker.
What if any, are the plans for bringing it back?
How come they never went public?
I've looked for articles in the NY papers and as of yet found none. Maybe thats also a problem in todays world. We are not paying attention to whats going on at home.

What a bloody shame to read the bad news this morning. :barf:
Steve I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
Hard to believe that a company that is so identified with our cutlery heritage is actually gone.....
I own over a dozen Schrades that I have bought over the years and have never been disapointed in their product.
Another sad comment on the North American economy that the politicians keep telling us that is so good!!!
Well I better not hesitate and order those 100th aniversary specials that i was planning on buying...........
Lets all hope that someone will buy the name, reopen the plant and keep the Schrade knife brand alive for future generations.

Its a sad day for knife lovers

Kap

Don't bother with the knives.
Operations are over. Everything is done. You're order probably won't even process.

Thanks everyone for the good thoughts!

I do have something to fall back on. I run a side business with computer repairs/and all things digital. So I personally will come out OK, just sucks for everyone else here.

I always thought Schrade would be around forever. Quite a shock to see this. Really a sad time for the knife world.

As others have said, this is truly sad and a shocker.

I wonder about Camillus, since I believe that they were under the same family ownership.

I also wonder whether Camillus could keep at least the Old Timer brand alive. It would seem to be a good fit - OT is a line that at least on the surface seems to be popular and has no real competition from foreign brands (the cheap imported knives seem to be mostly the "tactical" stuff). And it would give Camillus an inroad back into the general retail/mass market that they abandoned many years ago.

I don't know what to say...

I´m Mexican but I feel bad, when I choose to buy American products over Mexican products it´s for a reason, they are good products, they are worth the price. I don´t think that the products that you get in the U.S. from outside compete so much in quality but only in price, same quality at a better price would be another thing, but it is not the case, if it was I would buy Mexican. It seems that globalization is taking to the U.S. the cheap crap that we are used to get in the third world and the market is happy with that.

I hope that we will see products from Mexico and China go up in quality with time, but they will also go up in price and competition can be fair, I´m sure that companies like Schrade can compete in a good quality market, and hopefully they will make a comeback.

I work for a Mexican bank founded in 1884 and I am close to retirement with pension and medical service, I was offered early retirement last year but did not take it, I know what a good company is and can appreciate Schrade as a not just another knife making company.

I also appreciate what the U.S. has done for others, I got my bachelors degree at UCLA and went to graduate school at the University of Michigan, this education has been very useful and important to me.

I feel so bad.

Not much to add except my own condolences, Steve. It almost feels like a death in the family. I liked what you and your dad said about everybody in the company giving it their best shot to stay afloat. You can hold your head up when that happens. Here's hoping you all land on your feet and make the best of a lousy situation. BTW, I drove into town as soon as I read this post and bought two new OTs and a UH. They're put away to give to my grandson NIB one day (he's not due to join us till next March).

Un-f@#$&*ing beleivable!!! Ijust read the post about Schrade and it breaks my heart. Mylove for knives started by coveting the Old Timer 8OT my Pop-Pop kept in his desk when I was little. Iused to make up excuses to get him something from his desk because I knew he would let me see his knife while I was in there. He only carried that knife when he went ringneck and grouse hunting. His daily carry knife was a Schrade electricians knife issued to him by PPL.He carried that knife for the rest of his life. It deeply saddens me that we are losing one more of the Good Guys. My dad also has carried Old Timers and Uncle Henrys for years and I have lots of them my self. I'm grateful to have Pop Pops knives, but tonight I'm heading for Wal Mart to stock up on the models Idon't have.
It seems so tragic to me that we are losing so many of our cherished things to the almighty buck, I like money as much as the next guy, but was also lucky enough to be taught what really matters by great men like my Dad and Pop. I.ve always enjoyed my Old Timers and carried them with pride 1 because they,re good knives but its also tradition im my family. Using those knives helps feel a little bit closer to two of my heros. They just don.t make em like that any more and the world is a poorer place for it.

I am very bummed!

Just bought several of their older blades. Like them a lot! They made very good hunting knives.

I don't mean to be an ass. However, for all of you going out to get into your imported cars I don't want to hear about it from you. You'll be writing the same sympathy notes when Ford shuts down.
