I started the thread bout my opined wobbling. Don't have to worry bout that now. I was rolling hay today and was using the opinel and left it on the pto shield of the baler and tryin to beat the rain the knife is in one of the bales of hay. This is why I don't carry expensive knives. Lol! I lose more knives than I wear out. I've lost bout three in the last two weeks!

Yeah and I don't know if im goin to get another one. They aren't my cup of tea. I think I'm going to try either a 301,303,309 buck. Never carryd a buck so don't know what to expect.

I'll stop by with a Metal Detector. :D

I use the 301 for dirty work, you may like it, if you can keep it. :D

Lord I know lol! If u brought a metal detector u would have enough knives to start a knife shop! Lol! Now the ones I lose round barns or the cattle pens I usually find after a while. The ones in the fields and fence rows is MIA forever.

Opinels aren't for everybody IMO. I like mine a great deal and use them like there is no tomorrow, but still they take a bit of warming up to. I for one love the 300 series of Bucks as well and feel they make an excellent more robust slip joint. A 301 or 303 would make an excellent knife for farm chores and the like. The 420HC while no super steel is good stuff as far as I'm concerned and not too terribly hard to sharpen.

Hey opinel is a great knife. Im not bashin them in any way. I'm just not a one blade guy. I'd say a 3 1/4 thru 3 7/8 stockman is my kind of knife. I've heard that bucks was tough. I can say that for bout a week I put that opinel through the ringer. I cut myself tryn to lock it open bout 4 times this week. The steel is awesome in em tho.

Those traditional-style Buck knives might be nice, but I'd never trade my Opinel for one. :D

Sound like you need a knife with a bail
After years of being a chronic knife loser, I started carrying only knives with lanyards. Haven't lost one since.

I've done a bit of farm and ranch work too. A small fixed blade might be just the thing.

Well the was a guy that I worked with at Virginia tech beef center and he carried a small anza I think that was the name. I used his quite a bit cutting net wrap of rolls of hay. It had an old file for a blade. Great knife but I hate carryn stuff on my belt or a clip ( just my quirky ways) plus I wear overalls. Now a lanyard I've looked into.

I think I paid an extra buck for my #8 with a leather lanyard pre-installed.

It got a workout at summer camp this year on Parents Night slicing up the ton of food that was brought in to our campsite. Man, teenagers can eat! :D

Opinel's are a quirky kind of knife. Kind of like old school funky 1960's VW bug kind of quirky. Some folks take to them, some not. But I'd never, never knock the 300 series Buck pocket knives. I carried a 301 stockman too long and too far to not have great respect for the stuff they will stand up to. If your looking for a rugged work knife for use on the farm, I can't imagine a tougher knife than a Buck 301 or 303.

I hope whoever finds that Opinel tells us whether being baled in hay cured the wobbly blade problem.

Another good one to look into are the US made Schrade Old Timer stockmans. They can be had for a great rice on the auction sites.

I tell y'all what. I'm goin to find this opinel! I know which bale of hay it's in. Then we will all know how tough these knives are! Lol!

Now you say it's in a bale of hay. If it's in a square bale, not a BIG problem, more of a huge PIA. If it's in one of those round bales, then best of luck to you sir, I would go nuts.

I have to agree, you need something with a lanyard etc. A Buck will work great, so will a SAK with bail. You're lucky the bailer didn't turn the knife into a missile, or drag you in with the knife.
