Bye Bye Opinel

We unrolled that 5x5 roll of hay to a pen of cattle. We found it with a metal detector and it didn't even have a scratch! A 7$ knife went through a hay baler and survived! Gave to our farmhand! Didn't fix the wobble either! Lol!

Since the Opinel is a popular farmers and workers knife in France, I'd bet that some of them have survived some very unusual things.

I agree with the opinions on the Bucks. I have known guys that have carried them for years, depend on them completely, and sadly use them for all kinds of things other than cutting. Can't kill them, though.

They are affordable and work like hell.

Farmkid, from one farm kid to another, email me your address. I have a Buck stockman with your name on it. I've had it a while, but have never carried it. It's still new, barely out of the box. I just have never warmed up to Buck knives. If you like it, use it. If not, pass it on.

You should check out the Svord Peasent knife, and the Buck 110. Both hardworkers that can take a beating and won't bankrupt you if you loose them.

Well the was a guy that I worked with at Virginia tech beef center and he carried a small anza I think that was the name. I used his quite a bit cutting net wrap of rolls of hay. It had an old file for a blade. Great knife but I hate carryn stuff on my belt or a clip ( just my quirky ways) plus I wear overalls. Now a lanyard I've looked into.
Do your overalls have the little buttonhole on the chest pocket? If they do, there's a lashing point right there. Use a little lobster claw type thing to hook onto the bail (so you can release it for use) and you're good to go.
My relatives that wore overalls (almost) always kept their knives in the chest pockets anyway- it's hard for a knife to fall out of a chest pocket if you're driving or riding an ATV.

I think I paid an extra buck for my #8 with a leather lanyard pre-installed.

It got a workout at summer camp this year on Parents Night slicing up the ton of food that was brought in to our campsite. Man, teenagers can eat! :D
Man, they saw you coming on both instances! Just kidding ya. I like these Opinels and I'd like to get another one...I'm leaning toward the #8 garden knife. I like the blade style of it and I think I'll get the optional leather lanyard as well. :D

Well I'm kinda torn. I've got buck fever. Yesterday went to town and can't find a buck stockman. It was all cases. Apparently buck isn't a big seller around here. Asked papaw he said they was hard to sharpen. After the reviews y'all posted I'm still wanting one. I've carried cases all my life but they are getting sky high. I've traded my carrying knives away and torn between a 301 and a 303. Know I've carried trappers before but I like not feeling a knife in my pocket. Any suggestions?

Have you considered the 302? I believe it's a little thinner than the multi blade models. If you were happy with the Opi, single blade might be the way to go. Buck's 420 HC is not hard to sharpen, IMO. It depends a lot on the profile of the blade out of the factory. My Vantage was very sharp and needed very little work. My 309, on the other hand, took a bit of reprofiling to get to my liking.

Here is a video I made about my 309: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2L62E1Hs03s
Here is a post I made about the Buck vs. Case pen knives: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...The-battle-of-the-pens-(Case-109-vs-Buck-309)

Now is the 302 just the single bladed 301? I believe papaw was talkin bout the old bucks from the early eighties. Idk ive never used a buck knife. I sharpen free hand with a diamond stone so cases and German eyes is easy.

The 301 would probably be a better choice for hard use, the 303 is quite capable, but a little slim in the grip department for me...however you might notice the 301 in pocket more than the 303...but if you are used to carrying trappers, I think the 301 would be a comfy rider...Bucks 420hc is easy to put a real nice edge on it, and holds up very well...

I sharpen freehand with a piece of sandpaper on a piece of cardboard. I don't think you'll have trouble with the Buck.

Yup, 302 is the same length as the 301.

I might go with the 301. I've been experimenting lately with carrying different patterns and sizes. I'm liking the smaller knives. The only thing I really cut anymore is twine, net wrap, bags, calves and hogs. I have big hands so a 301 may suit me better.

Yes. The 302 is a single bladed 301.

In the early 80's Camillus was making stockman pattern knives for Buck Knives. Buck started making their own in ~1985.

With a diamond hone, everything is easy. But honestly, Buck 420HC is no harder to sharpen than Case Tru-Sharp. Same alloy. Buck runs theirs harder, though. Nevertheless, it is the same alloy and is not hard to sharpen.

I'll second that. Buck isn't hard to sharpen. Harder than some of the older soft high carbon steel you grandfather probably grew up on, but not that hard to get a good edge on.

If you decide you want that Stockman, let me know.
