I do not own a black coated spyderco knife. However, I am currently looking at the CE byrd Raven, and I can compare the coating to a black CRKT k.i.s.s. in the dark, or m16 13sf. The coat on the raven is kind of powdery feeling, and after letting a buddy make a chug-hole in the top of a pabst can, the coating has scraped off a little. The crkt coatings feel smoother, and come off slightly less with similar abuse. The byrd series are fantastic values, as you probably know, so if you have handled the spyderco black paramil and also a black coated CRKT, then by the transitive property, my post could help you.
