Byrd Bowie, not impressed

I'm not blown away by the looks of the Byrd. Don't know how it handles, fit & finish, etc., so I won't chime in on that.
Sal makes a good point about improvements & initial public reaction. When I saw my 1st Spydercos (circa '81-'82) I absolutely hated them. I was firmly convinced that I would NEVER own one of those ugly, humpbacked, serrated, "Ginsu-looking" knives. Now I own or have owned more than 2 dozen. I carry a Spyderco every day. Never say never. Sal & Co. do a good job- they're probably the top innovators in the industry & don't underestimate them. That being said, Sal, you've got a job on your hands w/ the Byrd line. Hats off to you for wanting to introduce a "bargain" line w/out sacrificing quality, but IMHO there's still some ground left to cover.

thanx Rugger. The byrd line is not expected to please Spyderco customers. Not possible at the lower price.

Hi Sal,
Personally, I firmly believe it would be possible to please a good cross-section of Spyderco's core customer base w/ a well-executed "bargain" knife line. While some may sniff at a "lesser" knife, there are others who would and do appreciate an attractive working knife of decent quality at an "entry level" price point. I wouldn't outright dismiss the customer base of Spyderco as being mutually exclusive of that of the Byrd line. You can't please all of the people all of the time, but you can try to put a good quality cutting tool in their pockets... ;)
Best of luck w/ the new endeavour- I'm curious as to what's coming next.
Regards,
Mike

Is this Chinese factory making byrd knives the same one who's making coldsteel knives?

Thanx Rugger. Time will tell.

Lreed, There are hundreds, if not thousands of knife factories in China. It's not like Seki where only a small number exist.

We are currently working with three diffeent factories to see who can be trained to satisfy me. We have found few in the world today that can.

I don't know what other companies they work with.

An interesting concept, some have argued that they don't like the look of the new line. I would say the new line is not for us Spyderholics, its to try and get a more economical product for those with less economical pockets! ;)

At least the new line will be safe to use, not like those nastly knock off copies...

Personally I have always considered Spyderco to be fantastic knives at the price, but then I have always loved Spyderco as a company and for their product range. My first really nice folder was a Wayne Goddard C16S in Micarta... I still have it and love it to bits! Superb build and finish.

I may be a custom knife buyer, but I alway have time for my Spyderco collection! In fact the Spyderco knife most in my pocket at the moment is a Salt, followed by a Calypso Jnr in VG10.

I hope the new range makes some progress in getting a better product out to people who can't understand the need to pay a 'bit more' or who can't afford to do such.

I would like to see what the pocket clip looks like?
When will the next style of Byrd being coming out?
