Byrd Cara Cara G10

I have a G-10 Meadowlark coming along with my Caly 3 - I was hoping yesterday, but..... Now you've got me almost as excited about the Meadowlark as the Caly3:D

I recently bought a Manix and I was astonished to discover that my G10 Cara Cara had BETTER fit and finish out of the factory. I've pimped my Cara Cara since, and the finish on the back of the lock is now as smooth as the back of any premium Case slipjoint, both opened and closed. (That is to say, it is a mirror, with everything so flush that you can't see the different parts unless you look really hard.) It didn't take much to get it that way. About 5 minutes work.

My Manix (which cost 4 times more than the Cara Cara) is pretty flush along the back when closed, but there's a small gap when the blade's locked open.
Please don't misunderstand, the Manix is an incredible knife, and it's now my EDC, but the craftsmanship of the Byrd is phenomenal for the price. As I've heard someone describe before, buying a Byrd is kind of like paying for a Hyundai and getting a Porsche. Buying a Manix is like paying for an Audi A4 and getting a Porsche Turbo.

After a pretty long layoff from knife interest. These Byrds are part of what has got me interested again. I got tired of the newest steel, latest gizmo. I really enjoy simple, well made knives that don't cost much money.

Again, I'm also interested to hear what everybody thinks about the very light "detent" spring (or whatever it's called that keeps it folded when it's folded)--anyone else have any issues with this?
Hi, JD. This is a main topic in the review I posted this morning:

FWIW mine is working pretty well now since rebending and cleaning up the lockbar spring, also the bronze washer could have been a factor. Interesting that yours and mine are both FRN models .... also like you, I wouldn't want this knife any heavier, though that's just a matter of taste.

Hi all,

I've had my Cara Cara g10 for a couple weeks now, and it often finds it's way into my pocket. I just like this knife! Mine has incredible fit and finish, very smooth open and closing and a great edge (all for 21$ shipped!!). But I guess the most important thing is it feels great in my pocket and great in my hand. I buy quite a lot of knives that I then resell because they just don't "fit" for me, classic example was a Benchmade 710HS. Everyone swore by it, but didn't work in my hand for some reason.

The Cara Cara G10 feels fantastic. The G10 is nice and grippy, the knife doesn't take up to much of my pocket, and there seem to be numerous grips on the knife that are just down right comfortable.

Sometimes I feel bad that a 21$ knife is beginning to displace others from edc, but I really just like it that much.

Hi Rogco,

Don't feel bad! Carry what you like! Good is good, regardless of price. Just because something is more expensive doesn't necessarily mean that it's better. We have all been conditioned to think that quality and price are linked, because that's usually the case. But it's not always necessarily true. Byrds are a perfect example of this. They are the exception to the rule.

I really love my Byrd knives. I currently have the Raven, Crow, Meadowlark, and Cara Cara. The latter two being my favorites. I really hope that Spyderco comes out with more models and ones that feature the FRN and G10scales. Great knives great price!

Just bought the Meadowlark FRN PE and it amazed me! Really good value for money....now I need to buy a Cara Cara in G10 soon:grumpy: ;)

Why does Spyderco makes the competition so hard for there own Delica and Endura 4? IMO this makes them more expansive over time because of the lower selling numbers.

I should get my next 2 G-10 Cara Cara's today. I just gave my wife's Grandfather mine, and I got a new one for my Dad, and of course a new one for myself.

G-10 Byrds are great stuff!
Altough I have a Spyder Mini Manix, D'Allara DP and a lot of other folders, I EDC a G-10 Meadowlark since I got it. They're SO good. :D
(My G10 Cara Cara and the Crossbill also a beast! )
