Byrd is a budget line from spyderco, the salvo is a kershaw.

What do you like about the knives?

I don't like getting wrapped up in brands personally I could care less if it's an M-tech if it's good then it's good,I'm looking for a heavy duty folder with good edge retention and rust resistance and most importantly ergonomics
 
Im not too up on the specs of those knives so if you don't mind posting them it would be helpful to all.

Its not so much a brand thing as it is a quality thing, the kershaw will have better build quality and IIRC is made of better materials.

are these your only choices?
Budget?
how hard use we talking?
 
The Salvo is a really solid knife. If you think you'll like the blade shape and the handle, I'd say go for it. The only negative complaint that I have about it is that the thumb stud is a little small and sharp.
 
The Byrd because it has a opening hole instead of a stud. That's reason enough for me. Honestly I'm not familiar with this particular Kershaw. They make great knives, but I'll always pick the one with the opener I like.

Plus it's a framelock.
 
Salvo, it's also a framelock and has the better steel. Plus, it's backed by the best warranty in the industry. Made in USA.
 
Do you want the wide or narrow blade, the studs or hole, and do you want a choil? The Byrd is an ounce heavier, has a mild recurve, and is tip up only. The steel and lock are about a wash, and both stainless frames with grip inserts.

The Byrd sounds like a more ergonomic blade,I'll pick one of each though and see which one I like more
