I was checking out the catalogue that came with my Mule and noticed that the Duckfoot sharpener is a pretty clever little device. It is like a Sharpmaker shrunk down into keychain size.

I was wondering if anyone had one and how do they work? Do they work for larger blades?

I thought this also until I saw this pic.(Note the "in-hand" pics at the bottom) Not exactly keychain size. It seemed smaller to me in other pics...Still a great idea though, smaller and more "packable" than a Sharpmaker.

I thought the exact same thing, until I saw a demonstration video. Not keychain size, for sure! It's kind of funny how much larger it is than what we though, actually. I wonder how the grit compares with the diamond Sharpmaker rods. IIRC, I read or heard somewhere it's about 600 grit.

I don't have the diamond rods for the Sharpmaker, so I can't compare them. I'd say around DMT coarse from using it.

Mine didn't come with the instruction DVD, so maybe I'm trying to use it wrong, but I found it very awkward for PE blades. It works great for SE though.

It does take just a little bit of time to get use to the feel of using the Duckfoot but I used my (that I bought last week) to sharpen my Ranger RD6 and it did a great job.
The DVD gives you a lot of useful information on the different uses but for knives (basically) you tilt it to one side and then the other, use it like you would the Sharpmaker but do several strokes on one side and then tilt it to the other side and do the same amount of stokes. It’s a very handy tool to have, for the price all blade lovers should buy one.

The flat on the back side of it works really well as a "bench stone" for odd-ball chisel grinds and the like. I even got my crkt P.E.C.K. sharp for the first time ever!

The Duckfoot is about 6 inches long, i wouldn't advise carrying it on a keychain becasue the diamons will dislodge if they rub hard against a metal surface.

having a 1x5 flat surface along with radiused edges, all diamond coated, sounds really nice.
